Stephen Sondheim's cerebral, minimalist COMPANY might not be an obvious choice for a community theater here in Indonesia where musicals are still often seen as jazz-hands and kicklines, but director Fonnyta Amran and JPAC (Jakarta Performing Arts Community) made it work. The production of COMPANY was as game-changing as its original Broadway counterpart back in the day.

After the artful, intimate INTO THE WOODS last year, TEMAN (Teater Musikal Nusantara) is back with the bombastic and bodacious HAIRSPRAY. Directed by Broadway's Brandon Bieber, the glam production was worthy of Broadway barring noticeable technical issues.

At a second press conference, TEMAN (Teater Musikal Nusantara) announced that Broadway's Brandon Bieber (ANYTHING GOES, MARY POPPINS) will direct their upcoming production of HAIRSPRAY. The production team, featured cast members, and sponsors also shared their experience on the show so far.

As the inaugural show at the newly opened Amani Palladium Theater, LSPR Teatro's THE KING AND I was satisfyingly entertaining, though with some obvious room for improvement. The production ran for four days from 21 through 24 November 2019 and was directed by Bartolomeus K. Putra.

LSPR TEATRO, the theater club of Jakarta's,London School of Public Relations, announced their production of 2019: Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE KING AND I. This production will also mark their first performance in the AMANI PALLADIUM THEATRE, LSPR's new theatre located in their newly opened Bekasi location at TransPark Juanda. The show will run on 21-24 November 2019.

After the rock musical NEXT TO NORMAL, JAKARTA YOUTH FOR PERFORMING ARTS (JYPA) set their eyes on the high school horror CARRIE: THE MUSICAL. CARRIE will run on 17 and 18 January, 2020 at GEDUNG KESENIAN JAKARTA theater. The production is licensed through Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals.

STMANIS - the theater club of BINUS University - will debut a new play SEMAYAM on November 29th at BINUS University Kampus Anggrek. This show will be their 54th production.  STMANIS has also teamed up with an NGO (non-governmental organization) as part of the show's social campaign.

SMILE MOTIVATOR, a theatre company focusing on inclusivity of the disability community, will perform their original musical THE JOURNEY at the DAGO TEA HOUSE theatre, Bandung. The production will incorporate both people with disabilities and allies in an exploration of movement, sound, and feeling.

TEMAN (Teater Musikal Nusantara) is bringing HAIRSPRAY to CIPUTRA ARTPRENEUR theater, Jakarta, on 21-22 December. TEMAN is teaming up with renowned local and international actors, including Morgan Oey and Lea Simanjuntak. Morgan and Lea shared their thoughts on Hairspray at a press conference last Thursday.

Performing art community D'ARTBEAT will debut original musical PERON ('TRAIN PLATFORM') at the GRAHA BHAKTI BUDAYA theater, Cikini, Jakarta on October 12 and 13.  The musical will run for three shows.

Despite its title, TEATER KELILING's THE GREAT RAHWANA focuses more on razzle-dazzle moments than consistently developing the titular character's duality. Yet the resulting extravaganza offers its own greatness. 

Stephen Sondheim's musical INTO THE WOODS JR. came to USMAR ISMAIL HALL, Jakarta, on August 25th, 2019. This production by RELASI NADA DUNIA (RND) featured child and teen musical actors from the greater Jakarta area in a fun fairy tale mishmash that rivals productions with adult performers.

TEATER KELILING, in association with event organizer KREASI IMAJI MAHESA, will present the stage musical THE GREAT RAHWANA. Based on the Indian legend of Ramayana (which has been ingrained into Javanese folklore for hundreds of years), this reexamination of the timeless narrative will take stage on September 21st  and 22nd at the CIPUTRA ARTPRENEUR theater, Jakarta.

Community theater Jakarta Performing Arts Community (JPAC) will bring Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's musical comedy COMPANY to Indonesia later this year. The MTI-licensed show will run on November 29th through December 1st at Teater Salihara, Jakarta.
