NY Philharmonic's LE GRAND MACABRE Features Rob Besserer As Atmosphericist 5/27-29

The New York Philharmonic's upcoming production of György Ligeti's 1975-77 opera, LE GRAND MACABRE, will feature the newly-created role of Atmosphericist, to be played by actor/dancer Rob Besserer, from May 27th to 29th. In this silent role - which was conceived specifically for the production - Mr. Besserer will serve as the performer of the 'live animation' taking place on stage, as created by director/designer Doug Fitch.

Highline Ballroom announces its performance schedule for May 17th to May 31st. Performers ranges from Nas and Damian Marley to the Backstreet Boys. It is located at 431 West 16th Street between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue. Tickets may be purchased through Ticketweb, at the Highline Box Office from noon until doors close, or at 866-468-7619. Highline Ballroom is a full-scale restaurant with a menu described as American Continental with a Southern flair. There is a full bar with all premier liquors and domestic and international cold beer, and they serve a full menu at all of their concerts. A $10 food and/or beverage minimum is standard for table seating during shows.

Summer Place Players announces its five-week Summer 2010 program, scheduled from June 28th to August 1st, Monday through Friday, in the University of Hartford's state-of-the-art Handel Performing Arts Center. Recent alumni of the musical theatre summer camp have appeared on Broadway and at noted regional theatres such as Hartford Stage and Goodspeed Musicals. Others have been accepted at some of the country's finest professional training programs.

Cesaria Evora Underwent Open Heart Surgery, Cancels All 2010 Performances

Africa's Cape Verde singer, Cesaria Evora, had open heart surgery on Monday, May 10, 2010 in Paris hospital. The surgery was in response to a coronary problem that occurred this past weekend. The operating surgeon reported that things went as well as possible. Cesaria is suspending all activities until the end of the year, including her June 2010 concerts in Washington, DC, New York City, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal.

American Stage Theatre Holds Wrap Party for 25 Years of American Stage 5/25

American Stage Theatre Company and the St. Petersburg Museum of History will celebrate the end of American Stage in the Park's first quarter of a century with a Wrap Party at the museum, Tuesday, May 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Light hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be provided. Free admission to the museum's exhibit on the history of American Stage in the Park is included (a suggested donation of $10 will go to help the museum).

Street Theatre Company, which was forced to cancel its final two performances of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE due to the flooding in Middle Tennessee, announces that it is able to bring back the show for one additional weekend. Performances will be held, Friday, May 21st at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 22nd at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Proceeds from the Saturday matinee performance will go to flood victims.

Two NYC Students Take 1st & 2nd At Nat'l August Wilson Monologue Competition

Two students from Brooklyn and Bronx place first and second in the National August Wilson Monologue Competition at the August Wilson Theatre on May 3rd. Originally an alternate for the NYC competition, Jared Findlay, from Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School, took home the first place prize with his nuanced performance of King Hedley from August Wilson's King Hedley II. Derrick Starks, from Fordham High School for the Arts, won second place for his keen interpretation of Holloway from Two Trains Running.

Acorn's Fairy Tale Players End Season with RUMPELSTILTSKIN 5/14-23

Acorn Productions (90 Bridge Street, Westbrook) will offer the third and final production, RUMPELSTITSKIN, by the company's new Fairy Tale Players. It will be performed from May 14 to 23 in the Acorn Studio Theater in Westbrook's Dana Warp Mill. Fairy Tale Players are an ensemble of adult and child actors who have trained in Acorn's Acting Academy. Acorn's Producing Director adapts and directs a version of this well-known story in which a fast-talking magical creature turns straw into gold for a miller's daughter who wishes to marry the king. Performances take place over two weekends on Friday nights at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 adults and $3 kids twelve and under.
