Yesterday, June 2, Hollywood celebrated the premiere of 'Splice' at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, 'Splice,' a sci-fi psychological thriller, centers on two scientists (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) and their dealings with mixing human DNA with genetically engineered material. Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) executive produces.

Sir_Paul_20010101 Yesterday, June 2, 2010, President Barack Obama presented former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress, in the East Room of the White House. The prize, named for American songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin, has been awarded annually since 2008 to a musician who has made exceptional contributions to the world of popular song. The prize's first recipient was Paul Simon. Last year, Stevie Wonder received the award.

IMBD news is reporting that Hairspray 2, a sequel to the 2007 Hairspray film starring Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, John Travolta and Michelle Pfieffer, has been canned. Hairspray composer/producer Marc Shaiman was supposed to team with John Waters on the project, which had had a tentative release date of July 2010 in the early stages of it's planning. The story was going to follow Tracy Turnblad (played by Nikki Blonsky in the first installment) and her pals as they navigate the 'next era of music,' the late '60s.

On the recovery from a viral infection that kept her out of the theater for several performances over the past couple of weeks, Catherine-Zeta Jones is back in action and will be performing in both shows of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC today, the show's rep has confirmed.

PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song, will record the original Broadway cast album of SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM on June 6th and 7th. Today, BroadwayWorld has learned that the June 25 performance will be filmed live for television as a feature-length documentary by HBO and World of Wonder Productions. As BroadwayWorld has reported, Diff'rent Strokes actor Gary Coleman died of a brain hemorrhage on May 28, 2010 at a medical facility in Utah after suffering a head injury. UsWeekly.com is reporting today that Coleman bumped his head after falling from exhaustion. Coleman's friend, Jeremy Spence, tells Us Weekly that Coleman slipped after returning home from a draining routine dialysis session on Wednesday, May 26 (he had gotten them three times weekly due to a dual kidney transplant as a child), causing an inch-long gash on his head. Coleman's wife, Shannon Price, immediately called an ambulence.

Kelli O'Hara, who won critical acclaim for her performance as Nellie Forbush in Lincoln Center Theater's production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC will return to the production on Tuesday, August 10 and perform the role through Sunday, August 22 when the musical plays the final performance of its record-breaking run at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. On Wednesday, August 18, the Tony Award winning production, directed by Bartlett Sher, will be broadcast nationally at 8pm on PBS' 'Live From Lincoln Center.'

Second Stage Theatre (Carole Rothman, Artistic Director) has announced that Zach Braff, Bobby Cannavale, Sutton Foster, and Ari Graynor will co-star in the world premiere comedy TRUST, written by Paul Weitz, directed by Peter DuBois. Mr. Weitz returns to Second Stage Theatre, where his plays Privilege and Show People premiered in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Directed by Peter DuBois, who staged Second Stage's acclaimed production of Becky Shaw, TRUST will begin previews on Friday, July 23 at Second Stage Theatre (305 West 43rd street) and officially open on Thursday, August 12. The production runs through September 5.
