In a world increasingly dominated by texts and tweets, a timely new opera will offer a digital-age take on the time-honored tragic heroine. 'The Empty Hours' (Las Horas Vacias) by acclaimed Spanish composer Ricardo Llorca will have its staged world premiere at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on November 19th. The tale of a lonely woman whose obsession with the internet fuels an extraordinary fantasy world, 'The Empty Hours' will be presented by the New York Opera Society in a special, one-night only performance.

The Charlestown Working Theater will present Bulgaria's Pro Rodopi Art Center's performance Chick with a Trick. Chick with a Trick is a performance with puppets for family audiences. It tells a story about a hen who lays a bonbon instead of an egg. In a deep panic, Hen goes to look for advice and support from her friend the Duck, to the Doctor, and finally to the King, but obsessed by their own troubles, they do not pay attention to her 'problem'. In the end, inspired by the beautiful sunny day, Hen convinces herself that there is nothing wrong if one does something unusual and different, especially if one brings joy to the world.

Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the New York Philharmonic in the 2010-11 season as The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence. In this role she will perform three concerts with the Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Michael Francis (in his Philharmonic debut); two chamber concerts - with violist Yuri Bashmet and cellist Lynn Harrell in the first - and double bass player Roman Patkoló and Philharmonic musicians in the second; and a recital with her long-time collaborator, pianist Lambert Orkis. Ms. Mutter's programs will reflect a mix of eras, offering established violin repertoire alongside new works.

On Wednesday, October 6, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will launch his ninth annual 'Take Your Man to the Doctor' campaign with a press conference at Brooklyn Borough Hall. 'Take Your Man to the Doctor' is a call to action for men of all ages, ethnicities, and economic levels to regularly visit a doctor, and for the women and men who love them to help make it happen. Participating Brooklyn hospitals, clinics and healthcare professionals will offer free health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, cholesterol, diabetes, glucose, glaucoma and HIV, as well as podiatry and free flu shots, and make important health information available onsite from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Borough Hall Plaza. Deutsche Grammophon is proud to release two all-new recordings featuring revered conductor Pierre Boulez (who recently celebrated his 85th birthday and has recorded on DG for 40 years) and the equally acclaimed Cleveland Orchestra in collaboration. In two different programs devoted to Ravel and Mahler respectively, Boulez and the Orchestra reveal their long-standing affinity and complementary styles. The Cleveland Orchestra was the first American orchestra Boulez conducted, and today he is '...still immensely fond of this orchestra because it continues to come very close to my own idea of the way in which a score should be realized in terms of the music and its sonorities.' Both recordings will be available October 5, 2010.
