In a guest house on the Gulf, a hundred miles from New Orleans, old friends gather in a summer home to rediscover connections, rekindle lost relationships, and find peace - only to find that they can't rewrite the stories of their past. The Antaeus Company, L.A.'s classical theater ensemble, presents The Autumn Garden by Lillian Hellman, directed by Larry Biederman. Four gala openings of the fully double-cast production, two with each cast, take place October 28-31, with performances continuing through December 19 at Antaeus' interim home, Deaf West Theatre in the NoHo Arts District. Low-priced previews begin October 22.

Howard County Arts Council Announces 2011 Grant Awards

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced that 38 arts and cultural organizations will receive $342,943.00 in matching grants from the Howard County Arts Council for Fiscal Year 2011. The awards were announced at the Arts Council's annual meeting and reception at the Howard County Center for the Arts on September 24, 2010. These matching grants will be used by 18 Howard County organizations; 9 Howard County public schools; and 11 key Baltimore City organizations to support general operations, artist residencies, and special projects in the arts. Community Arts Development Grants fund day-to-day activities for Howard County arts organizations as well as special projects in the arts.

DNA Presents VOICES, WHAC-A-MOLE, OUT OF AND INTO et al. 10/7-10/8

As part of its pledge to foster emerging artists, Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) presents RAW Material; a juried performance series that encourages burgeoning artists to bring new work to a live audience. Mentored by Artistic Advisor Gus Solomons jr, this season's artists will experiment with innovative ways to construct dynamic frames, discover breakthrough transitions and articulate emotional connections. Fall 2010 RAW Material artists include: Randy Burd; Sumi Clements/Summation Dance; Moriah Evans and Sarah Beth Percival; Gorgas/PoMoMojo; Joanna Kotze; and Dawn Robinson. The six up and coming choreographers will present their new 10-minute works in DNA's 130-seat state-of-the-art theater, October 7 & 8, 2010 at 8:00pm.

The Frist Center for the Visual arts will open Young Tennessee Artists: 2010 Statewide Advanced Placement Studio Art Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, in the Conte Community Arts Gallery. This third bi-annual exhibition showcases the artwork of 33 high school students who were enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art programs throughout Tennessee in 2010. The 40 drawings, paintings, photographs and mixed-media works represent eleven schools and were chosen from seven hundred submissions from across the state. The exhibition, organized by the Frist Center, will continue through April 10, 2011.

Long before Google Maps or GPS, seafarers used navigational triangles to pinpoint their location and to chart their course in relation to celestial bodies and the earth's poles.
