COLLEGIATE THEATRICS: Lipscomb University's Emily Hughes
by Jeffrey Ellis - January 27, 2015

As hard as it may be to fathom, the calendar indicates we're practically to February already and 2015 is off and running like some out-of-control roller coaster. Perhaps no one is more acutely aware of this than Emily Hughes, an acting major at Nashville's Lipscomb University, who no sooner than she had her bags unpacked from Christmas break that she was already hard at work on her next assignment: playing Mayzie LaBird in Seussical the Musical, which runs February 13-22 at Collins Alumni Auditorium.

COLLEGIATE THEATRICS: Boston Conservatory's James Spencer Dean
by Jeffrey Ellis - January 20, 2015

One of Nashville's favorite young actors is quickly growing up. As a teenager, he was onstage for countless area theater companies, but now he's known as James Spencer Dean and he's pursuing his bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater at The Boston Conservatory. Who'd have thought that Spencer Dean, who delighted audiences in numerous Act Too productions and was a 2012 First Night Most Promising Actor, would now be known as "James Spencer Dean" and wowing audiences in the northeast just as did back home?

BWW Reviews: GSU's ALMOST, MAINE: That Time Absurdity and Hooligans Didn't Ruin a Show
by Sally Henry - October 19, 2014

During Georgia Southern University's one-act production of John Cariani's ALMOST, MAINE, the most frequent question I asked myself was first, 'Why did those hooligans on the front row come to see this show?' and second, 'Is that a new character?' Student shows of course come with student patrons, but unruly ones have great potential to ruin a production- and these distracting young people very nearly did. And I must say that in a show full of short vignettes, concentration was vital. Thus from a 'kids these days' approach did I view this play, wishing I had brought a cane to wave in frustration.

BWW Review: UMass' CASANOVA - 'Nothing is Real Here; Everything is Appearance'
by BWW News Desk - May 6, 2013

There are a few things I have learned about the UMass theatre department this semester. One, they love using the aisles of the theatre to make entrances and exits, two they are extremely fond of nudity (no matter the show), and finally they love modernizing stories. These things are what make me love all of the shows I have seen this semester, and Casanova by Constance Congdon was no exception.

BWW Interview: UMass' Alison Bowie Chats Dramaturgy & Production of CASANOVA
by BWW News Desk - April 22, 2013

"The University of Massachusetts-Amherst Department of Theater is fortunate to count renowned playwright Constance Congdon among its alumnae. We are pleased to end our celebrating of women playwrights with one of her favorite works, Casanova. This play nimbly examines the story of the famous Italian seducer and across time and space, weaving memory with fantasy and prompting intriguing questions about the nature of love and remembrance. Sensual and rich, elements that include touches of Restoration comedy, hints of Commedia dell'Arte and allusions to the lavish and bawdy European capitals of the 18th century come together to create a delightful and insightful whole."

BWW Review: For the Love of VENUS
by BWW News Desk - April 18, 2013

'The Venus Hottentot is dead. There won't be any show tonight.' This is one of the first lines you hear in the opening scene of Venus. You don't know who or what the Venus Hottentot is, or how they died, but you already want to know what happened. You want to know what kind of impact she had on these people. Was it good, was it bad? This show had me hooked within the first scene.

UMass Amherst Hosts Talk Inspired by Suzan-Lori Parks' VENUS
by BWW News Desk - April 16, 2013

Sarah Bartmaan also known as the Venus Hottentot, was a Khoisan woman from South Africa who lived during the early 19th century. Because of her large buttocks, she was taken from her country and put on display all over Europe and was considered a freak. In the show Venus, author Suzan-Lori Parks remembers and re-imagines this historical figure and looks at how the mainstream culture views Black bodies. Venus ran from March 28-April 6 at the Curtain Theatre at UMass Amherst. All shows were sold out.
