BREAKDOWN

The play takes place in the present in Kampala, Uganda.
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES AND UNDERSTUDIES:

DEMBE – 18+ to play Late teens. Black.Ugandan. Twin brother to Wummie. Sensitive, witty, romantic, confident and naturally carefree. Very smart, but not a diligent or disciplined student. Has a natural ease, but more of a follower than a leader and not fully defined. Insightful, open and vulnerable. Ugandan accent.

SAM – M-L20’s. Bi-racial, his mother was Ugandan and his father was Irish. A doctor, intelligent, talkative, sexy, has a sense of longing, doesn’t feel he fits in anywhere, until he finds Dembe. Willing to make a fool of himself. A bit impetuous, though mostly out of love. An atheist, thoughtful, but impulsive. Northern Irish accent

JOE – Mid-30’s. Black. Ugandan. Older brother to Dembe and Wumme by about 10 years. An evangelical, Christian pastor, he’s assumed the mantle of father of the family and the authority that comes with it. A dynamic, powerful speaker and a charismatic presence. Likable, but formidable and dangerous when crossed. Staunchly religious, righteous, driven, responsible, dependable. When he speaks, people listen. Ugandan accent.

WUMMIE – 18+ to play Late teens. Black. Ugandan. Incredibly smart, down to earth, honest, forthright and passionate. Self-possessed and a quick thinker, she’s highly protective of her twin brother, Dembe, who isn’t as aware of consequences as she is. Intuitive, pragmatic, principled and disciplined. Unlike her brother, she’s acutely aware of consequences. She’s also witty, warm and fun. Ugandan accent

MAMA – L40’s – M50’s. Black. Ugandan. A mother figure to Dembe, Wummie and Joe, but not their mother. Warm, maternal, can be charming and loquacious, but she has a will of iron and can go toe to toe with Joe. Has authority and status as an elder within the community and can be dangerous and desperate when she feels threatened. Religious and very firm in her beliefs. Although she covers it well, she’s fearful of losing status and losing face. Invested in maintaining the social status quo, she can be calculated in her desire to gain power and authority in in her community. Ugandan accent

NAOME - 18+ to play Late teens. Black. Ugandan. Mama’s daughter, she doesn’t speak because of a recent traumatic incident. She has a haunted quality, childlike and vulnerable, something’s been robbed from her.
