BUDDY HOLLY: (Man, 18-25, White) Dynamic and charismatic with excellent guitar skills and the desire to lead the company and thrill audiences as the world’s first rock & roller. Baritone.
JERRY ALLISON: (Man, 18-25, Open Ethnicity) Cheeky, fun, has excellent drumming skills and plays the guitar.
THE BIG BOPPER/JOE B MAULDIN: CAST. (Man, 18-30, Open Ethnicity) THE BIG BOPPER: Larger than life, irrepressible, warm and engaging, has an excellent singing voice. Key song is ‘Chantilly Lace’. Baritone. JOE B MAULDIN: Serious and talented bass player.
RITCHIE VALENS/AS CAST: (Man, 18-22, Latino) A whirlwind of energy, young and good looking. Has an excellent singing voice for his key song ‘La Bamba’. Doubles as a Hayrider, Asst/Decca Producer, and a DJ. Plays guitar and percussion well. Baritenor.
MARIA ELENA/AS CAST: (Woman, 20-25, Latina) Classy, attractive, and intelligent with a subtle sense of humor, able to sing and move well. Ability to play piano is a big plus but not prohibitive. Doubles as a DJ and the Clear Lake Singer.
NORMAN PETTY/HIPOCKETS DUNCAN/AS CAST: CAST. (Man, 28-45, Open Ethnicity) NORMAN PETTY: Keen businessman with an ear for the next big thing. A brilliant sound engineer and pioneer. Perhaps a little too serious for the young at heart. Excellent brass/saxophone and/or piano an advantage. HIPOCKETS DUNCAN: Buddy’s first manager and family friend, old-school country and western DJ who doesn’t understand rock & roll. Warm, big-hearted enthusiasm for the boy he wants to make a star. Excellent sax/brass instrument and/or piano an advantage.
VI PETTY/AS CAST: CAST. (Woman, 28-35, Open Ethnicity) Wife of Norman. Good ‘ol down-home wife who makes the coffee and looks after Norman and the recording artists. Kind, enthusiastic, and humorous. Also contributes on piano to many songs- excellent piano skills an advantage. Doubles as a Hayrider, DJ, and musician.
(Woman, 20-50, Black) A regular star of the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Sharp, engaging, with great comedic timing. Has excellent soul / R&B voice. Brass instrument an advantage. Doubles as a DJ.

ROGER DAVIS: (Man, 20-25, Open Ethnicity) A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive. Vocal range: A4 - F2
MARK COHEN: (Man, 20-30, Open Ethnicity) Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd. Vocal range: G4 - A2
TOM COLLINS: (Man, 25-35, Black) A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV-positive. Vocal range: A4 - F#2
BENJAMIN COFFIN III: (Man, 25-35, Black) The landlord of Mark and Roger's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth. Vocal range: F#4 - Bb2
JOANNE JEFFERSON: (Woman, 25-40, Black) A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen. Vocal range: E5-G3
ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD: (Man, 20-30, Latine/Black/AAPI) The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Tom's lover. Vocal range: A4 - C3
MIMI MARQUEZ: (Woman, 18-21, Latina) An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions. Slender and sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local strip club. She lives in the same building as Mark and Roger’s loft. Vocal range: E5 - Eb3
MAUREEN JOHNSON: (Woman, 20-25, Open Ethnicity) An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne. Vocal range: F5 - C4

ANYA: CAST. (Woman, 20-30, Open Ethnicity) When we first meet Anya, she is a lost soul but with great strength, pride, and dignity. As the story progresses, she begins to discover her sense of self and the possibility that she may be the missing daughter of Tsar Nicholas. Possesses a sense of humor, wit, and determined spirit. Her transformation into Anastasia should be breathtaking. Soprano with belt.
DMITRY: (Man, 20-30, Open Ethnicity) An opportunist trying to make it on the streets of Russia by selling stolen objects from the Tsarist past. He is the prince of St. Petersburg’s black market. He creates the scheme to find an Anastasia impersonator in order to gain the reward for her safe return. He is smooth, persuasive, and a real operator. Has a sense of danger, edginess, and charm. Not a typical romantic leading man although he and Anya eventually fall in love. Vocal range: A2-A4
DOWAGER EMPRESS: CAST. (Woman, late 50s-60s, Open Ethnicity) She is the formidable and imperious grandmother of Anastasia. Anastasia is her favorite grandchild and she loves her with all her heart. She never truly gives up the belief that her granddaughter might be alive but finally, after years of enduring Anastasia pretenders, she becomes hardened and bitter. It is only when she meets Anya that her old spirit begins to return. Has elegance, beauty, and a regal bearing. Vocal range: F3-Bb4.
VLAD: CAST. (Man, 40-50, Open Ethnicity) Before the revolution, Vlad was a minor functionary at the imperial court. He is Dmitry’s right-hand man and because of his romantic relationship with Lily he arranges a meeting between Anya and the Dowager Empress. Has wit, style, and is a character comedian with panache with generosity of spirit. He cares deeply for both Anya and Dmitry and doesn’t want either of them to get hurt. Vocal range: A2-F4.
GLEB: CAST. (Man, 30-40, Open Ethnicity) A member of the Chekist secret police. A zealot with tremendous intensity and a dangerous sexuality. As the play progresses we see him rise in power and position within the political party. He is in love with Anya but would not be above killing her if necessary. Not the typical villain; he must be likeable. Vocal range: A2-Gb4.
LILY: CAST. (Woman, 30-50, Open Ethnicity) She is the Dowager Empress’s confidante/lady-in-waiting. She’s compassionate, respectful, and good at her job, but when she’s away from the Dowager she knows how to have a good time and rules the Russian expat roost. A character comedienne, but with allure and sex appeal. Strong movement or dance ability. Vocal range: Eb3-A4.
ENSEMBLE: Seeking 3 ensemble members to play various roles including but not limited to Count Leopold, Tsar, Tsarina, Romanov family, Ipolitov, Sergei, Marfa, townspeople, soldiers, prostitutes, royal family, ballet dancers, etc.

CLAUDE: (Man, 40-60, White) The gregarious and well-liked Mayor of Gander, Newfoundland, Claude loves his work, the townspeople, and his daily traditions, but he’s never had to deal with a crisis of this magnitude before. Vocal range top: G4
BONNIE: (Woman, 30-40, Open Ethnicity) A no-nonsense mother of three, Bonnie is the head of the Gander area SPCA. When she discovers animals are trapped on the planes, she stops at nothing to ensure their safety but in frustration, she often lashes out at those around her. Vocal range top: B4
BEULAH: (Woman, 40-60, Open Ethnicity) The head of the Gander Legion, with a firefighter son, who walks Hannah to her church and prays with her. Mezzo.
OZ: (Man, 30-40, Open Ethnicity) The quirky constable in the two-person Gander police force. When the town’s population suddenly doubles, Oz helps out in unexpected ways. Vocal range top: G4
DOUG/MICK MARSON: (Man, 30-40, Open Ethnicity) An Air Traffic Controller, married to Bonnie, who tries to help his wife and the animals. Vocal range top: E4.
JANICE: (Woman, 20-30, Open Ethnicity) An eager new local TV reporter, Janice is thrown into the deep end on her first day. Initially naive about the world, Janice must face the pain and confusion around her. Vocal range top: E5
BEVERLY/ANNETTE: (Woman, 40-60, Open Ethnicity) ANNETTE: A local teacher at the Gander Academy and mother to a lot of children. Vocal range top: D4. BEVERLY: The first female captain for American Airlines Pilot, Beverly Bass has always loved flying, when her world suddenly changes. Vocal range top: C#5
DIANE: (Woman, 50-60, Open Ethnicity) A traditional divorcee from Texas, who is terrified that her son may have been flying at the time of the attacks. When she finds out that he’s safe, she’s given a new lease on life and discovers a wilder, more carefree side of herself. Vocal range bottom: D5
NICK: (Man, 50-60, Open Ethnicity) An English oil engineer who is focused on his work, Nick’s life is turned upside down when he falls for Diane. Vocal range top: E4
KEVIN T/GARTH: (Man, 30-50, Open Ethnicity) KEVIN T: The head of an environmental energy company in Los Angeles, Kevin was on vacation with his boyfriend (and secretary, also named Kevin), when they are stranded in Gander. Inspired by the town’s generosity, Kevin creates the Pay it Forward Foundation. Vocal range top: G4. GARTH: The head of the local union, representing the Bus Drivers. Vocal range top: G4
KEVIN J/ALI: (Man, 30-50, MENASA, Asian, Latinx/Hispanic, Black, Indigenous) Kevin’s boyfriend and secretary. Sarcastic and unhappy, he wants to leave as soon as possible.
BOB: (Man, 20-40, Open Ethnicity/Black) A hardened New Yorker, Bob is suspicious of where he’s landed, fearing that it’s World War 3, that someone is going to shoot him and steal his wallet- but instead, he ends up losing his New York jadedness. Baritone.
HANNAH: (Woman, 40-60, Black, Asian, Latina) The mother of a firefighter in Manhattan, Hannah waits for news about her son and is comforted by Beulah.

JOAN RIVERS/MRS. MOLINSKY: (Woman, 45-60, White/Jewish) The central figure of the play, Joan is a trailblazing comedian, TV host, and businesswoman. She is portrayed at different stages of her life, from her early struggles in comedy to her peak fame and personal challenges. Sharp-witted, fearless, ambitions, and deeply insecure despite her confidence on stage. She thrives on humor, but beneath her jokes is a relentless drive and vulnerability. Able to nail Joan’s iconic attitude and accent.
MELISSA RIVERS/YOUNG JOAN: (Woman, 25-30, White/Jewish) Joan’s daughter, who narrates much of the play and provides insight into her mother’s life from a personal perspective. Smart, sarcastic, and fiercely independent. While she idolizes her mother in many ways, she also struggles with living in her shadow. Able to nail Joan’s iconic attitude and accent.
EDGAR ROSENBERG/AS CAST: (Man, 45-60, White/Jewish) Joan’s husband and longtime manager, Edgar is an essential part of her career and personal life. He plays a major role in her professional decisions and eventual downfall. Intelligent, business-savvy, but emotionally fragile. He is supportive yet controlling, battling his own demons while trying to maintain control over Joan’s success. Doubles as Dr. Molinsky, Johnny Carson, and others.
JIMMY SANGER/AS CAST: (Man, 30-40, Open Ethnicity) Joan’s first husband. Jimmy is a well-meaning but traditional man who expects a conventional marriage. He fails to understand Joan’s ambition, leading to the swift demise of their relationship. Doubles as Blake, Harold, Chet, and others.
