'CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES'

Book by Jessica Zuehlke & Jim Stowell
Music & Lyrics by Drew Jansen
Director: EDDIE CURRY
Music Director: BRANDON VOS
Choreographer: KAREN PAPPAS
Stage Manager: TBD
Projected First Rehearsal: April 3, 2025
Opening: April 17, 2025
Closing: May 18, 2025

SEEKING:

MRS. SNUSTAD (VIVIAN) is 60 to 70 years old and a widow. She is the most conservative of the ladies, and she is the matriarch of the kitchen. She is the one that makes sure the food tastes good before leaving the kitchen and washes the dishes. Her duties are well defined by her. She sits at the center worktable on a stool almost as a throne where she commands the work of the day. Her word is not to be tested and her decisions are final. She is a mix of Shirley McClain as “Weeser”, Bea Arthur as “Maude”, and “Doris” in Everybody Loves Raymond.

MRS. ELROY ENGELSON (KARIN) is 40 to 45 years old and is second in line to take over the kitchen. Her cooking is fabulous. She is neat and tidy in appearance and quite pretty in a very conservative way, almost looking like Jackie Kennedy with everything perfectly in its place. She senses the world is about to change because she listens to her daughter, Signe, who without her influence on Karin’s life, might be as rigid as Mrs. Snustad.

MRS. GILMER GILMERSON (MAVIS) is in her late 50’s and is a farmer’s wife and a grandmother. She is not afraid of work and can fix anything mechanical as well as do the books. She is the most physical comedienne of the three ladies because of her “jump in and work” attitude. She appears rather disheveled even when dressed up for a wedding. She is somewhat butch, but not gay. Everyone loves her.

SIGNE (BEVERLY) ENGELSON is the daughter of Karin and has just started college at the University of Minnesota. She comes home to visit often and loves working with her mother in the kitchen. She is 18 or 19 years old and ready to make her mark in the world. She represents change. Not only the change the church was going through in 1965, but the change the country was beginning to go through at that time. She would never really become a hippie, but she will like the styles once they are introduced at Sears in Minneapolis. She is pretty like her mother, and very sweet, but not afraid to challenge Mrs. Snustad and speak her mind in a respectful way.

PASTOR E. L. GUNDERSON is the same age as Karin, but he has just married a young wife. The ladies all seem to have crushes on him in a respectful “pastorly” way. He is goaded by the fact that he comes from a family of Pastors, and his brother, not he, inherited his father’s church down the road. He is a bit competitive and finds that he can truly relax when in the kitchen. He has a very friendly and intimate relationship with God, almost like “Tevye”, and he knows that the church runs best when the kitchen is happy.

SEEKING:

ARIEL: (Female Identifying, 18-30) Soprano with belt. A mermaid and King Triton's youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hardheaded, naive, and emotional, but also kindhearted. Funny, with strong physical comedy. Excellent singer. Strong mover. NOTE: Flying experience is a plus.

PRINCE ERIC: (Male Identifying, 25-35) Tenor. A human monarch who has no interest in taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more. Excellent singer. Strong mover.

SEBASTIAN: (Male Identifying, 20-40) Tenor. A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can't bring himself to stand in Ariel's way. Charming, and hilarious. A true song and dance man, and funny!

URSULA: (Female Identifying, 35-55) Mezzo with Broadway Belt. The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Funny, vampy, but malevolent, calculating, and deceptive.

GRIMSBY: (Male Identifying, 45-65) Baritone. Prince Eric's British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage.

KING TRITON: (Male identifying, 45-60) Baritone. King of the Sea and Ariel's father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans.

FLOUNDER: (Any gender, 16-25) Tenor. Ariel’s best friend and loyal companion. Tends to panic in stressful situations. Strong mover and singer.

SCUTTLE: (Any gender, 20-40) Tenor. A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Bumbling and forgetful but has a heart of gold. Funny, loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite their supposed expertise. Strong tap dancer. Strong singer.

FLOTSAM & JETSAM: (Any gender, 20-40) High Tenor and Baritone. Eels and Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, they will say anything you want or need to hear. NOTE: Must be comfortable on heelys or willing to learn.

CHEF LOUIS: (Male identifying, 35-50) Tenor. The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades; seafood in particular. Lots of physical comedy and featured comic singing. Great comedic timing.

ENSEMBLE: (Any gender, Any age) Strong dancers with strong contemporary musical theater voices; looking for diversity and unique performers; will play a range of maids, gulls, princesses, lagoon animals, sea creatures, mersisters, chefs, sailors, and more.
