BREAKDOWN

JOY: THE MUSICAL

SEEKING:

JOY (30s, she/her): ROLE IS CAST. A single mom from Long Island struggling to make ends meet. Joy has a long-ignored passion and talent for inventing and for using her inventions to help others. Over the course of the musical, she comes into her own. And throughout, she is equal parts joy incarnate and rough around the edges. Life has not been kind to Joy, but it’s made her tough, caused her to radiate light and positivity, and prepared her to fight the battles ahead of her with optimism and ingenuity. Strong belt with head/mix.

TOOTS (early 60s, she/her): ROLE IS CAST. Joy’s mother. A recluse who hasn’t left the house in years. She appears to have no faith or interest in her daughter and her daily activities consist of watching People’s Court and buying products on QVC that get shipped to the house. Very skilled with comedy and a very strong singer. Strong belt with head/mix.

RUDY (early 60s, he/him): ROLE IS CAST. Joy’s father. A car salesmen-esque character of a man who over-promises and under delivers despite meaning well. He is crass, yet charming at the same time and spends much of the musical going at it with his ex-wife. Very skilled with comedy. Strong baritone/tenor range - up to G/Ab.

TONY (30s, he/him): ROLE IS CAST. Joy’s ex-husband. A Sinatra wannabe who starts the musical living in his ex-wife’s basement waiting for his career as a performer to take off. His heart is in the right place, but he doesn’t follow through, forgetting to pick his daughter up at school, not paying any of the bills, etc. He is all charm and also a mess. Strong tenor.

CHRISTIE (10, she/her): ROLE IS CAST. Joy and Tony’s daughter. Whip smart, especially when it comes to emotional intelligence. She is perceptive, insightful, and sometimes a little too clever for her own good, but she also has moments of vulnerability in which we are reminded that she’s just a 10-year-old who needs her parents to come through for her. A very strong singer; Christie has two numbers of her own and is present throughout most of the show. Strong belt with head/mix.

LORRAINE (40s/50s, she/her): Rudy’s enigma of a new girlfriend whom he met dancing at the Havana Club. Very skilled with comedy. Strong alto (up to an E).

COWBOY EDDIE (40s/50s, he/him): A bigoted, cunning, and cruel man who attempts to swindle Joy out of her money and take her invention away from her. Eddie is from Texas and has a very thick accent. High Rock Tenor.
