PREPARATION

To be considered for both musicals and straight plays, prepare 16-bars of an up-tempo song, 16-bars of a ballad, and a 1-1 ½ minute monologue. To be considered for straight plays only, prepare 2 contrasting monologues, no more than 1 ½ minutes each. Actors unable to attend in-person auditions are encouraged to send video submissions per the instructions on our website:

LYLE MACKENZIE: Male-identifying, 30s-40s. Irish. A farmer and father-figure to James. He struggles to balance his family responsibilities with his drive to protect his little brother who is determined to join the uprising. Heroic baritone.
JAMES MACKENZIE: Male-identifying, 20s-30s. Irish. Lyle’s younger brother who is determined to join the Scottish uprising without considering how it may affect anyone else who may love him. Bright tenor.
ELSPETH FORSYTH MACKENZIE: Female-identifying role. 30s-40s. Irish. Lyle’s wife. She balances her love for Lyle and their efforts to have a child with a deep understanding that her husband has responsibilities to protect his little brother. Warm soprano.
AILEY: Female-identifying. 20s-30s. Irish. Trouble. A free spirit who abides by her own rules and those of the faeries. She loves James and, although she holds a secret, she understands he must go off to battle. Folk soprano.

CONNOR: Male-identifying. 17. A social outcast, sullen, and can be aggressive. A drug user. He commits suicide in act 1 but appears as a vision to Evan throughout the show.
ZOE: Female-identifying. A young teenager. Connor’s sister and Evan’s love interest. A frustrated youth, she wishes she knew her oft-hated brother more before he died.
CYNTHIA: Female-identifying. 40s-50s. Connor and Zoe’s mother. Tries to do her best but often doesn’t know what that entails.
