SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in BLINDED BY FAITH (see breakdown). This is a new original play, and these performances will be used as workshop performances for further development of the script. This show will be showcased as part of New York City's Summer Fest Theater Festival. All performances will take place at Hudson Guild Theater.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a one-two minute contemporary dramatic monologue. Also please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

BLINDED BY FAITH

SYNOPSIS

Blinded by Faith tells the captivating story of the negative effects of gay conversion therapy and how damaging it is to the mental, and physical health of individuals who undergo this type of treatment. Some of the key themes this play touches on is religion; it also highlights issues of depression and suicide and how these are all major components of this kind of therapy.

SEEKING

JASON MATHEWS

African American male (Late teens, early 20's) A very sensitive young man with an emotionally painful experience involving his roommate who he developed feelings of love for, which caused him to question everything he was taught about life, love, and who the world thinks he should be.

BRANDY ANDERSON (ROLE ALREADY CAST)

Jason's best friend, African American female (Late teens, early 20s) A young, outspoken college freshman student who is very serious and prideful about her education. Constantly hungry for new educational information in school, she feels she has all the answers to everything.

MARY MATHEWS

Jason's mother, African American female (40s and up) A single mother deeply rooted in her Christian religious beliefs. She loves her son Jason very much, but the love she has for him combined with her strong religious beliefs causes her to be very opinionated and overbearing.

ANDREW JAMESON (ROLE ALREADY CAST)

Conversion Therapist from an organization called Genesis International, male, any ethnicity (30's and up) A man who at one point used to identify as homosexual. Andrew chose to pray and change his sexuality, and now he identifies as heterosexual. Feeling this has worked for him, his main purpose in life is to help others do the same.

KEISHA JAMESON (ROLE ALREADY CAST)

Andrew's wife, female, any ethnicity (30s and up) Her marriage to Andrew has taken an emotional toll on her, Keisha chooses to be in denial about her husband’s sexuality, causing her to cling very heavily to her religious Christian beliefs.

REV. MICHAEL JOHNSON (ROLE ALREADY CAST)

Minister at Mary and Jason's church, African American male (40s and up) A very private man that has his own personal struggles. (Note: freedom in the actor's interpretation about what the struggle is.)

ANTWONE MOORE

Brandy and Jason’s friend, African American male (Late teens, early 20s) A very out and proud gay man who's not ashamed to talk about his sexuality and what he's been through in life.

DR. PATRICIA WATKINS

Professor in Gender and Sexuality Studies, any ethnicity (40s and up) A highly educated woman who questions everything about life and whatever people say to her.
