BREAKDOWN

FIVE NOTES

SEEKING:

NAMBÍ - character portrayed is female, 18+ to play 16, Latinx. A dutiful, hard-working teen with an extraordinary gift. The only child of an unstable ganchera mother. Things have gotten harder and more volatile since Nambí's father left. She is an anxious perfectionist; her need to have order in the midst of a landfill is palpable. Violin playing skills a plus.

SOFÍA - character portrayed is female, 18+ to play 16, Latinx. Nambí’s fun, flighty best friend. Her mother is a likable hairdresser, and her dad runs a small store out of the crowded family home. She has three older sisters and six nieces and nephews, all of whom live in the small family house. Feeling lost in the family shuffle, Sofía seeks attention elsewhere. Violin playing skills a plus.

BLANCA - character portrayed is female, 18+ to play 16, Latinx. Nambí’s wry, sardonic, other best friend. A soccer player who needs to bang on things. Her doting ganchero father/welder is kind and religious. Blanca lost her faith and moorings after the death of her mother from a hit-and-run and has not dealt with her grief. Drum playing skills a plus.

NUNU - character portrayed is male, 19, Latinx. Guileless, unhoused older boy who works as a ganchero in the landfill and whose mind follows a different rhythm. He reads the world but not the room. Nunu is his own family but longs for more. Cello playing skills a plus.

JOSÉ - character portrayed is male, 18+ to play 16, Latinx. Flirty bad-boy who is really a teddy bear. José’s dad is a ganchero who adores Phil Collins; his older brother Tito is an addict. Like Sofía, José is trying hard not to fall into bad family traps. Saxophone playing skills a plus.

DANI - character portrayed is male, 18+ to play 17, Latinx. Grandson of a well-to-do family of famous musicians from Favio's hometown. His grandfather played the same harp he now plays and takes care of like his own child. Unlike the other teens, Dani reads music and has already developed a true musician’s discipline. Harp playing skills a plus.

MÓNICA - character portrayed is female, late 30s-late 40s, Latinx. Nambí’s needy and codependent mother, a ganchera who once had other dreams. She has become increasingly angry and difficult since Nambí’s father left them. She recognizes Nambí’s musical dreams but can’t find a way to support them.

FAVIO - character portrayed is male, 30s-50s, Latinx. Earnest, eager, nerdy, oversharing, environmental engineer and musician who gets fired from one job to discover he’s better at another. After his sustainable trash recycling program in Cateura fails, he begins teaching music lessons to the kids in the community, which evolves into the world-famous Recycled Orchestra. Guitar playing skills a plus.
