BREAKDOWN
Amy Heckerling takes us back to 90s Beverly Hills with this musical version of her beloved film Clueless, a modern spin on Jane Austen’s Emma. With her singular voice, she gives us a score that reimagines 90s hits into ingenious parodies and yearning monologues for her lovesick characters. Director Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and choreographer Kelly Devine(Come from Away) drive this fresh take on the story of Cher, a girl so psychotically optimistic she can’t see that her bungling attempts at playing Cupid disguise her own fashion-plated isolation.
SEEKING:
THE TEENS – ADULTS TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL AGE
Cher - Beverly Hills High School student. Beautiful, wealthy and psychotically optimistic. She has an active social life and a keen sense of fashion but her main focus is caring for her father and improving everyone's lives. Pop/rock soprano beltress who knows her way around a straight tone…vocally she’s equal parts Gwen Stefani and Linda Perry. Must belt to E5. Very strong mover; PRINCIPAL
Dionne - Cher's best friend and partner in crime. Regal and intelligent. Has a long term relationship with Murray. They are a teenage old married couple. Lives in a world between R&B & pop/rock – she’s a little Des’ree and a little bit Natalie Imbruglia. Belts to E5. Strong dancer; THIS CHARACTER IS AFRICAN AMERICAN; PRINCIPAL
Murray - Wealthy, educated and articulate, which he tries to hide by acting like a Rap star with street cred. Fights with Dionne constantly, but is totally devoted to her. King of the vocal interjection, he’s equal parts Usher. R. Kelly and Sir Mix-A-Lot. Baritone to G4, strong falsetto a plus. Strong dancer; THIS CHARACTER IS AFRICAN AMERICAN; PRINCIPAL. OFFER OUT.
Tai - A New York transfer. Insecure about being in the Beverly Hills environment. Has less money and social skills. Looks up to Dionne and Cher. Very suggestible in matters of the heart, but has real affection for Travis. Vocally she’s Lisa Loeb meets Jill Sobule. Belts to C5. Very strong mover; PRINCIPAL.
Travis - Stoner and skater. Hasn't got a mean bone in his body and doesn't think anyone else does. Loves Tai. Vocally a little bit Mark Oliver Everett (The Eels) & a bit Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies) if he were a tenor. Tenor to C5. Very strong mover; PRINCIPAL. OFFER OUT.
Josh - College freshman and Cher's ex-stepbrother. He's going through an idealistic and intellectually curious phase (which will probably be more than a phase). He has history with Cher and they have a comfortably antagonistic relationship. Vocally he’s equal parts Tal Bachman & Gregg Alexander (New Radicals). Tenor to D5. Very strong mover; PRINCIPAL. OFFER OUT.
WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL ACTORS OF CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS.
