Play Summary:
Robert Bolt’s Tony Award winning play A Man for All Seasons brings to life the story of Sir Thomas More and his refusal, as Chancellor of England, to support King Henry VIII’s divorce and England’s subsequent break from the church in Rome. Adrift in a political sea of corruption and compromise and with his very life at stake, More risks everything to stay true to his conscience. Full of wit and intrigue this timely play about speaking truth to power is more relevant today than ever.
Character Breakdowns:
Sir Thomas More
M. 48 – 60, any ethnicity
A lawyer, author, and advisor to King Henry VIII who rises to be Lord Chancellor of England. He is searingly intelligent, deeply thoughtful, complex, and compassionate. He is almost always subtle and composed but becomes passionate when stirred. Atticus Finch type. RP English accent.
The Common Man
M. 40 – 60, any ethnicity
The Common Man serves the pivotal role of charismatic narrator of the show. He also plays all the working-class characters in the play. He is canny, crafty, and very funny. He does whatever he can to survive and looks out for himself at every turn. Various working-class British accents.
Cromwell
M. 40 – 50, any ethnicity
Henry VIII’s fixer and right-hand man. He is the only person in the play who is Thomas More’s intellectual equal. He is amoral and cunning. His style is subtle yet direct – he doesn’t put on courtly airs. He is an intellectual bully and impatient with lesser minds. RP English accent.
Alice More/Woman
F. 48 – 60, any ethnicity
Alice: Thomas More’s wife. She was born into a slightly lower class than her husband. She is smart, brave, hot-hearted; a bulldog for her family. She loves her husband deeply but also loves her place in society. RP English accent.
Woman: A selfish, indignant woman who tries to bribe Thomas More. Middle class English accent.
Margaret More
F. 21 – 30, any ethnicity. Thomas More’s daughter. Extremely intelligent, compassionate, and very well educated. She is quiet but also subtly strong. She is her father’s daughter in every way. RP English accent.
Duke of Norfolk
M. 48 – 60, any ethnicity
A former soldier; athletic. Believes in tradition, convention and duty. He is content with his own moral and intellectual insignificance. He is blustery but good-hearted and a genuine friend to the More family. RP English accent.
Richard Rich
M. 28-35, any ethnicity
An academic, desperately looking to advance in the world. Rich is ambitious, unhappy, and easily led. His ambition is his weakness and he is always at war with his better nature. He is hounded by self-doubt. RP English accent.
King Henry
M. 35 – 45, Caucasian
Not the overweight Henry VIII from paintings – this is an athletic Henry in his prime. He is charming, spoiled, confident, and happy. He has a huge ego. Like a “monstrous baby” he is easily delighted unless his will is opposed and then he wields his absolute power frighteningly. RP English accent.
Cardinal Wolsey/Chapuys
M. 58 – 70, any ethnicity
Wolsey: Cardinal and Lord Chancellor of England. The playwright describes him as “a big decayed body in scarlet”. Very intelligent with a wry sense of humor. Impatient and direct. RP English accent.
Chapuys: A professional Spanish diplomat and lay ecclesiastic; religious but with elastic morals. Extremely sly and always plotting, but with a limited intellect. Spanish accent.
Roper/Attendant/Cranmer
M. 32-40, any ethnicity
Roper: Margaret More’s fiancé. Religious, passionate, self-righteous, moderately intelligent, with no sense of humor. He is well meaning but painfully earnest. RP English accent.
Attendant: A Spanish apprentice diplomat from a good family. Spanish accent.
Cranmer: Older than Roper. Sharp-minded and practical. He is the Archbishop of Canterbury but for him it is an administrative job – he has no real religious conviction. RP English accent.
