CHARLIE BAKER: Meek proofreader for a science fiction magazine. Witty, funny, smart. Extremely shy, but his time at the lodge causes him to come out of his shell and become the center of attention.
SGT. “FROGGY” LESUEUR: British military, with a spirit of adventure. Loud, bombastic, overwhelmingly British. Charlie’s old friend.
BETTY MEEKS: Elderly widow who owns the resort lodge. A hard worker, she has a fun, sarcastic nature, with moments of ditziness. Everyone’s southern Appalachian grandmother.
REV. DAVID MARSHALL LEE: Catherine’s fiancé. Seems like a charmer and sophisticated young religious man on the surface (“a good man to have on our side”), but shows his true, cruel colors when alone with Charlie.
CATHERINE SIMMS: A formidable former debutante, heiress to a family fortune, engaged to David. Emotional firecracker. Kind and caring toward her brother, Ellard, and shows Charlie the same attention.
