DRIVING MS. DAISY
Director: Hunter Foster
Story line: A three-hander that takes place mostly in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1948-1973. Daisy Werthan, a 72-year-old wealthy, Southern, Jewish, (reluctant) socialite, loses her driving privileges after a car accident. Her son Boolie hires Hoke Coleburn, an unemployed black man of around 60 to be her chauffeur. A relationship that forces the two to confront the ugly truths of a Jim Crow era South through the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and beyond. A play that tackles racism, anti-semitism, wealth discrepancy, education, and navigating the complicated history of Southern society. Driving Miss Daisy helps us understand the answer to these problems is through real human connection.
DAISY WERTHAN – Caucasian Female. (mid-late 70s: ages 25 years over the course of the play)
Jewish-American in the South. A proud, strong, and independent lady who is equal parts Southern and Jewish. A widow. Headstrong matriarch, intelligent, very capable and vibrant woman. At times, insufferable, and concerned with appearances. She lives, simultaneously, within and outside of the dominant Southern culture. As a Jewish woman, she and her family have found financial and social success, to a point. Hates the idea of a driver. Learns to love Hoke. Does suffer from early signs of dementia in the end. Southern accent.
HOKE COLEBURN – African-American Male. (Late 50s-Early 60s: ages 25 years over the course of the play). He was born on a farm in rural Georgia, didn't attend school, and has worked as a driver for most of his life. He sees the best in everyone but isn't shy about telling it like it is. Reads people and situations well. Hard-working. Trying to navigate through the system set up for him. Has lived his whole life in the South from late 1890's to 1948 (when the play begins) and dealt with everything that happened post-Civil War through pre-Civil Rights South in America. He has a public and private self. At first, he needs the job as Daisy’s chauffeur. Over time, learns to love Daisy. Southern accent.
BOOLIE WERTHAN – 40 to 60 years old, Caucasian male. Boolie is Daisy’s son. He ages from 40 to 65 years old during the course of the play. Boolie is a Southern Jewish businessman who pays much more attention to fitting into his Southern culture than his Jewish one. He is busy and practical, not one for much sentimentality, and possesses an affable Southern charm. But he is also a loving and very devoted only child to Daisy, and caring towards his employees, including Hoke. Has a dry sense of humor and comic timing.
