The hosts of 'The View' introduced the world television premiere performance of the brand new Disney stage musical, 'NEWSIES,' adapted from the popular Disney film starring Christian Bale, this morning. Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who wrote music for the 1992 motion picture 'Newsies' and has won eight Oscars© for such memorable scores as 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Pocahontas,' helped introduce the cast performance medley of both 'Santa Fe' and 'Seize The Day.'

Dolores DeFina Hope, singer, philanthropist and wife of comedian Bob Hope, died today at the age of 102 of natural causes.

The acclaimed off-Broadway production of Lysistrata Jones will transfer to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre this fall, with previews beginning November 12, 2011 and opening night scheduled December 14, 2011. Matthew Morrison created the role of Fabrizio in the musical The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also nominated for a Tony Award. His other Broadway credits include A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Hairspray, The Rocky Horror Show and Footloose. He appeared off-Broadway in the musical 10 Million Miles at the Atlantic Theatre Company. His TV and film credits include Dan In Real Life, Marci X, Primary Colors, Numb3rs, Ghost Whisperer, CSI:Miami, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Once Upon a Mattress, and arguably most famously, GLEE. His debut solo album received a May 10 release.

'8,' a new play chronicling the historic trial in the federal legal challenge to California's Proposition 8 will have its World Premiere on Broadway in a one night-only staged reading to benefit the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER). The play is written by AFER Founding Board Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black and directed by two-time Tony Award-winning actor and director Joe Mantello. Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk, based '8' on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. The reading is now completely sold-out!

Signature Theatre Company has just announced the playwrights participating in the Theatre's new Residency Five initiative, part of the expanded programming that will be presented at Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street, near 10th Avenue), the Company's new Frank Gehry-designed home. Annie Baker, Will Eno, Katori Hall, Kenneth Lonergan and Regina Taylor will be the program's inaugural playwrights.

The 2011-2012 season is certainly shaping up to be the season of new plays and musical revivals. Sprinkled throughout, however, are some exciting new musical additions, which will surely be vying for their spot in the musical canon as the next 'hit of the season.'

The Broadway premiere of the 2010 Olivier Award® winning Best Play, The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall, will begin performances this Thursday night, September 22, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street). The play's official opening night is set for October 13.

Broadway Rocks for Kids, a one-night-only event to benefit arts education programming for children of the Northeast, is set for Monday, September 19, at Drom in the East Village. The evening will include live entertainment and premium raffle prizes. Guests will also have the option of purchasing food and drink.

Roundabout Theatre Company has just announced a new block of tickets now on-sale through April 29th, 2012. Anything Goes currently stars 2011 Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as 'Reno Sweeney' and Tony and Academy Award winner Joel Grey as 'Moonface Martin,' and is directed and choreographed by 2011 Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall.

VENUS IN FUR will begin previews on Thursday, October 13 and open Tuesday, November 8 at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street). Broadway veterans Brandi Burkhardt and Robert Torti are set to lead the upcoming Pasadena Playhouse reading of SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE. The duo joins previously announced Marissa Jaret Winokur, who will play Becky in the project.

Due to the impending weather forecast of rain, Broadway Salutes will now take place at the Times Square Visitors Center (7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Street - between The Palace Theatre and McDonalds) this Tuesday, September 20, 2011, The Broadway League and The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds (COBUG) will present the third annual Broadway Salutes, a public celebration recognizing the countless professionals who have made Broadway great for decades. In this industry-wide celebration, which begins with a meet and greet at 3:30PM and takes place at 4:30 PM, theater professionals will receive special recognition for having worked 25, 35, and 50+ years in their respective theatrical craft. The event will feature performances by Raul Esparza and Leslie Uggams. Kathleen Marshall, Bebe Neuwirth and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, are special guests.
