Violinist Laurie Carney and pianist David Friend will give the world premiere of Robert Sirota's Violin Sonata No. 2 as part of a free concert at the Manhattan School of Music's Greenfield Hall (120 Claremont Ave.) on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30pm. Sirota wrote the sonata for Carney, a founding member of the American String Quartet (ASQ), and dedicated it to their mothers who both passed away recently. The concert will also include Brahms' Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2 in A Major; Messiaen's Theme and Variations; and Faure's Piano Quartet in C Minor with violist Daniel Avshalomov (also of the ASQ) and cellist William Grubb (Carney's husband).
Diana Damrau will make her role debut as the courtesan Violetta in La Traviata, conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin in his first Met performances of the Verdi tragedy. Saimir Pirgu sings Violetta's lover Alfredo, and Placido Domingo sings the role of Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, in this revival of Willy Decker's 2010 production. This season's performances will be Damrau's first time singing the role of Violetta anywhere, while Domingo will move from the tenor role of Alfredo, which he has sung at the Met numerous times since 1970, to the baritone role of Giorgio.
Barter Theatre has announced that it is extending the run of its hit musical comedy "I'll Never Be Hungry Again." The show has been selling out houses in Barter Stage II (167 seat venue), and the audience reaction has been so overwhelmingly enthusiastic that the production will move to Barter's larger Main Stage April 6.
The Open Fist Theatre Company will present MAD FOREST, written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Marya Mazor. MAD FOREST will preview on Thursday, March 14 & Friday, March 15 at 8pm and will open on Saturday, March 16 at 8pm and runs through Saturday, May 4 at the Open Fist Theatre, 6209 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.
DOMA Theatre Company opens its second "all musicals" season with a Tony, Drama Desk and Grammy Award-winning hit that sizzles with R&B soul. Marco Gomez directs a cast of 28 in Dreamgirls, with musical direction by Chris Raymond and choreography by Rae Toledo. The six-week run opens March 8 at the intimate MET Theatre in Hollywood.

Moses Man: A Musical Journey of a Holocaust Survivor will have its world premiere at the Jewish Community Center (JCC)'s Hart Theatre (1200 Edgewood Avenue) on March 30 through April 7, 2013.
In this world-premiere work, chosen as the winner of Michigan State University's 2012 International Playwriting Competition, playwright Melody Cooper examines the moral responsibility of "First-World" bystanders to international conflicts. It is 2006, and Rachel, a young woman from a military family, is giving up a life of humanitarian work abroad to marry an officer. Carl, a former U.N. Peacekeeping Officer and a friend of Rachel from her days working in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, unexpectedly turns up before the wedding. The desperate Carl reaches out to Rachel, begging her to remember the village massacre that they both witnessed and urging her to continue aid work in Darfur-causing tensions within Rachel's family to boil over. This haunting story is theatrically told, with flashbacks and visions of Carl's young friend Kigeri woven into the stage action, and sections from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus serving as chilling parallels to the conflicts in Rwanda and Darfur.

The film's English adaptation was written, produced and directed by Vivian Schilling and had a critically acclaimed, national US theatrical release last year. After breaking box office records for single highest sales day ($34,348) and highest weekly box office gross (over $91,000) in the the history of the intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, Nothing to Hide featuring Derek DelGaudio (2011 Close-Up Magician of the Year) and Helder Guimarães (2011 Parlour Magician of the Year) and directed by Neil Patrick Harris, must close on March 31, 2013 after four months of sell-out performances. The production must close due to the Geffen's scheduled run of Neil LaBute's highly anticipated world premiere adaptation of August Strindberg's Miss Julie which begins previews in the Audrey on April 23, 2013.

The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts unveiled its 2013-2014 performance season this evening during its annual Season Announcement Event. The diverse schedule will offer a full array of extraordinary theatrical, music and dance experiences: from the Ordway co-produced Miss Saigon, an enchanting production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Wizard of Oz, and a thrilling look at extreme competition in Bring It On: The Musical, to the 2012 Tony Award-winner for Best Revival of a Musical, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. In addition, the season includes a very special appearance of Blue Man Group, the return of the ever popular Broadway Songbook Series and a full line up of World Music & Dance performances.
