The cast and crew of Into the Woods are rehearsing to take the stage of The Pearlstone Theater tomorrow, March 7, with CENTERSTAGE's Into the Woods, a co-production with Westport Country Playhouse. Leading the adventure is director Mark Lamos (also Artistic Director at Westport), who last visited CENTERSTAGE with his staging of Sondheim's A Little Night Music.

The 1950s revue FOREVER PLAID is set to open March 15 at the new StarStruck Theatre in Stuart, Florida. This limited engagement will play for one weekend only, March 15-18.

Whistler in the Dark continues to bring their Dark Day explorations to Boston with Close-Up: An Evening of Theatre inspired by their main stage production of Craig Wright's Recent Tragic Events which runs at The Factory Theatre March 9th through the 24th.

The Canadian Opera Company presents a double bill of one-act operas as part of its 2012 spring season with the Canadian premiere of Alexander Zemlinsky's A Florentine Tragedy and the return of Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, last seen with the COC in 1996. The two operas are presented in a new COC production by the legendary soprano-turned-director Catherine Malfitano and world-renowned conductor Sir Andrew Davis. A Florentine Tragedy is sung in German and Gianni Schicchi is sung in Italian, both with English SURTITLES™. The double bill of A Florentine Tragedy/Gianni Schicchi runs for eight performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on April 26, May 2, 5, 12, 15, 18, 20 and 25, 2012.

Fat, impudent and cowardly, Shakespeare's Falstaff character was a compelling tub of lard, a Homer Simpson centuries before his time. Falstaff has been revived many times in plays, films and operas, and he returns once more in "The Mystery Call Girls Riot: And Other Sad Events Relating to the Incarnation of Mystery Call" (ISBN 1470000784) by Aka Lockord. Although this lively retelling of Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor," may question some 21st century notions, it is set in the American West during a period when ranches (to save fuel for the mechanized war effort) relied on horses for power. That practice continued for some years after World War II.

E! Online reports that Anjelica Huston will sing in a future episode of NBC's SMASH. Writer Scott Wittman revealed the spoiler while E! was on set interviewing SMASH star Megan Hilty.

Philadelphia Theatre Company announces BILL CAIN as the first recipient of the Terrence McNally New Play Award for the research and development of his newest play about Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins which has the working title Unvarnished. The Terrence McNally New Play Award is a $10,000 cash prize given annually to recognize a new play that celebrates the transformative power of art. The Award will also include a year of development support at PTC, including readings as well as administrative support and networking to help manage the future of the play beyond its time at PTC.

THE SHIPMENT is a Black Identity Politics show that combs through the images of African-Americans that dominate the media. Wielding sharp, offbeat humor, it points up the cliches, distortions and absurdities, turning the wearily familiar - a foul-mouthed stand-up comic, a drug dealer, a would-be rapper - into loopy, arch cartoons.

Doors slamming, on- and backstage intrigue and an errant herring all figure into the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.

BROADWAY SESSIONS, the long running, weekly, Manhattan based musical theater themed variety show and open mic, announces it's new residency at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER beginning Thursday, March 8th. Broadway Sessions is described as an evening of musical performances, games and open mic featuring a new Broadway guest each week. The show is created and hosted by Ben Cameron (Bway Wicked, Aida and Footloose) and features musical director Joshua Stephen Kartes on piano.
