Various news reports are indicating that the $50 million NEA stimulus, which was feared lost due to the amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). The Coburn amendment stated that 'None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.'

Variety is reporting that Peter Gabriel has withdrawn from performing at the Academy Awards in protest. Gabriel was told he would be performing for only 60-65 seconds in a medley of the nominated songs.

DOG RUN REP announces, as part of the South Street Seaport Winter Theatre Season, a new American adaption of Moliere's classic comedy TARTUFFE, directed by Jeff Cohen. TARTUFFE will play a four-week limited engagement @Seaport (210 Front Street), presented, in part, through the generous support of General Growth Properties. Performances begin Friday, March 6 and continue Saturday, April 5. Opening Night is Monday, March 9 (7 p.m.).

Seattle Shakespeare Company stages an adaptation of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, directed by John Langs. The production runs March 12 - April 5, 2009.

Oscar-nominated writer-director John Singleton has directed the trailer promoting the 81st Academy Awards, Academy President Sid Ganis announced today. Featuring Oscar telecast host Hugh Jackman, the trailers will run in more than 11,000 theaters around the country beginning Friday, February 13.

CNN, among various other news services, reports that President Obama used that most unthinkable of all 'M' words, considered nearly fatal to us theatre folk, yes, we can only mean, well...you know! While on a visit to Ford's Theater, site of President Lincoln's assassination, the President paid tribute to the 16th president's ability to recall passages of Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth. Fox has not released any more information on why she was deemed ineligible, mearly hours after the reverse was determined on the show. She was said to have been forced to exit and at first rejected the very notion of quitting sources told TMZ.

Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron's new play 'Love, Loss, and What I Wore' will be given six benefit readings on Monday evenings, starting on February 2nd. The play, directed by Karen Carpenter, is about clothes and the memories they trigger.

The Irish Times is reporting that Irish dramatist, journalist and self-styled curmudgeon Hugh Leonard has died-he passed away early this morning, February 12th, 2009. He was 82, the prolific playwright had been ill for some time.
