Sao Paulo's artistic scene gets a new stage this week. Unimed Theater comes with the promise of becoming a space of excellence for culture in the city. Located in one of the most central points of Sao Paulo, on the corner of Rua Augusta and Alameda Santos, just one block from Paulista Avenue, the architectural project bears the signature of architect Isay Weinfeld. Producers Monique Gardenberg and Jeffrey Neale are responsible for curating the show, which opens August 22 with David Bowie's Lazarus, directed by Felipe Hirsch.

The Brazilian authorial musical Cargas D'Agua, written by Vitor Rocha, got an American version and has been playing in New York since last weekend, August 10th at TADA! Theater. The show had two successful seasons in Brazil and even performed in cities in the country side of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais and Brasilia.

The show exalts black protagonism in a show that narrates and goes through the successes of Brazilian and international Black Music. On the scene, Ícaro Silva plays the commander Icarus, who pilots a spaceship and lands in various corners of the world at different times. It is a theatrical show-based show, a 'documentary play' with playful features such as projections and videomapping, which make the audience travel through time and space. In this musical journey, featuring live music and musical direction by Alexandre Elias, choreographies by Victor Maia, the staging honors names such as Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Tim Maia, Wilson Simonal, Beyonce and James Brown.

Cariri City, Ceara, is the starting point of the show O Magico di O, a place without rain and hope, from where a group of northeasterns go to Sao Paulo City in search of a better life. Using a Cordel Literature version of the classic The Wizard of Oz, the musical idealized by Vitor Rocha and Luiza Porto deals with home, go away and change of view bringing original songs. The opening is scheduled for August 10 at Teatro Joao Caetano.

The 2019 lyrical season of Sao Paulo's Theatro Municipal brings one of the most important operas of Italian romanticism, Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. With scenic direction by Jorge Takla and musical direction by conductor Roberto Minczuk, and sumptuous scenarios by Nicolas Boni, the premiere takes place on July 20 at 20h. The recitals follow on days 23, 24, 26, 27 and 30, always at 8 pm, and on Sundays 21 and 28 at 6 pm.

Cazuza - Pro Dia Nascer Feliz, musical that was already seen by 200 thousand spectators returns to Sao Paulo's stages in short season, from July 19 to August 25, from Friday to Sunday, at Teatro Porto Seguro. Libretto by Aloisio de Abreu with direction by Joao Fonseca.

'Macunaima', Mario de Andrade's masterpiece, won a new theatrical production by Barca dos Coracoes Partidos Company. The direction by Bia Lessa proposes a reflection on contemporary life, transforming the text into a musical rhapsody. The show is part of the permanent relevance of the most characteristic work of Brazilian Modernism: its ability to still provoke spectators, more than ninety years after its creation. Behind the apparent comedy, we are faced with a tragic character that sums up many of the impasses of contemporary Brazil. After all, Macunaima is, at the same time, an indian and a quilombola who is seen, by force of circumstances, moved to the big city, where everything is different and frightening. He is also a survivor: on returning to his quest, he discovers that he has been decimated. There is no more place for him in the world. Maybe there is no world anymore.

Putting together poetry and a reflection on the struggle of the ignored by society, the show of Grupo dos Dez, with direction by Joao das Neves (In Memoriam) and Rodrigo Jeronimo, MADAME SATA - UM MUSICAL BRASILEIRO (Madame Satan - A Brazilian Musical), performs season from July 12 to September 8, 2019, at Teatro Jaragua. The dramaturgy is signed by Rodrigo Jeronimo and Marcos Fabio de Faria.

The musical brings the first direction by Ariane Mnouchkine outside the Theatre du Soleil and it reunites a list of twenty Brazilian actresses that take turns in diverse roles. The short season runs from July 5 to 28 at Teatro Anchieta (Sesc Consolacao).

Absolute success in its Carioca season, the show Ao som de Raul Seixas 'Merlin e Arthur, Um Sonho de Liberdade' premieres on June 7, in Sao Paulo, and brings a creative artistic innovation: the languages of theater, cinema and design will be used for the first time together in the musical theater.

Brazilian actor who is famed for his role as Simba in the Brazilian and Spanish stage of The Lion King, Tiago Barbosa returns to Brazil with the show ESTRADA (Road). The one-man show brings together on stage the memories and successes of his career as a singer and actor.

Com Todas as Letras, a romantic musical comedy with songs by LGBTQ + Brazilian artists, approaches the LGBTQ + universe in his libretto. Showing the diversity, difficulty and struggle of each one of its characters, the play opens in Sao Paulo, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at Espaco Cia da Revista.

'Se Essa Lua Fosse Minha' by Elton Towersey and Vitor Rocha, is an unpublished Brazilian musical that opened on May 7 at the Teatro do Nucleo Experimental in Sao Paulo.

Angels in America is a two-part play by American playwright Tony Kushner which he describes as 'A Gay Fantasia on National Themes'. The work won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. The play is a complex, often metaphorical, and at times symbolic examination of AIDS and homosexuality in America in the 1980s. Certain major and minor characters are supernatural beings (angels) or deceased persons (ghosts). The play contains multiple roles for several of the actors. Initially and primarily focusing on a gay couple in Manhattan, the play also has several other storylines, some of which occasionally intersect. The two parts of the play are separately presentable and entitled Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, respectively, at Teatro do SESC Vila Mariana.

After three successful seasons in Rio de Janeiro, the musical comes to Sao Paulo in homage to Nelson Goncalves, the King of Radio, who would complete 100 years on June 21. Performed by Guilherme Logullo and Jullie, the play makes an incursion into striking moments of one of the greatest idols of Brazilian music, who sold more than 80 million records throughout his career.

Cangaco was the banditism phenomenon of Northeast Brazil in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This region of Brazil is known for its aridness and hard way of life, and in a form of 'social banditry' against the government, many men and women decided to become nomadic bandits, roaming the hinterlands seeking money, food and revenge. With text and lyrics by Newton Moreno, direction by Sergio Modena and musical direction by Fernanda Maia, the show is free inspired by testimonies of women involved in the Cangaco and exalts the female force. Tickets are free.
