We find ourselves in a pub during closing hours, suddenly a group of strangers rush in seeking safety. There has been an explosion. The explosion happened at a demonstration in the centre of the city. Amid the chaos these few were lucky to get away - or were they?
As they begin to check in with one another and try to piece together what has happened they also try to figure out where each of them stands on the issue at hand. A natural element has been discovered in a remote island nation that holds incredible medicinal properties said to cure cancer. The nation itself does not possess the industrialised resources to mine for this element and thus the debate of whether or not to mine on this territory with foreign industry divides the city, nation, and Western world.
Is this a cause worth killing for? Questions turn into debate that lead to clashes and finally a confession.
Strange things come up, bits that don't quite make sense, and we learn more and more that nothing is truly as it seems. All of a sudden solving the mysteries of the explosion become the least of their concerns. In moments of flashbacks we see how each of them got here but where will they go once this is all over?
This show is a thrilling and mystifying interrogation of how we receive information and the moral implications of our actions based what we choose to believe - in particular social activism that is based on social media disseminated information. Now, that information is readily available on a global scale, we are becoming more aware of far reaching concerns in all categories from civil rights to environmental causes. Though, we have also come to find that not all information is reliable. So where does it leave us when we fight for a cause we believe to be good when maybe the information surrounding that cause could have been manipulated?
Sin Eater is a bold new production directed and conceived by Karina Aviva Benjamin devised along with the company of theatremakers from E4:14 Productions, who pride ourselves on being an inclusive and integrated company of artists representing the intersectionalities of the migrant, multi-ethnic, LGBTQ+, differently-abled, and Female/Non-binary led communities. We use our life experiences to uplift voices from our communities and engage in provocative exploration of how we reconcile those experiences with the world around us.
"I'm a sin eater. I absorb the misdeeds of others, darkening my soul to keep theirs pure. That is what I am capable of."
