First Impressions Theatre first produced Noises Off in 1994 — 30 years ago! The set was designed and built by Nicholas Boughen for the then two-year old Deep Cove Shaw Theatre. A second production in 1999 showcased the same design. Besides what can be seen, there is a whole lot of magic hiding in this set and the company was thrilled when Nick agreed to design it once again. During the show the set becomes as much a character of its own as any of the zany other players.
Called the funniest farce ever written, Michael Frayn’s, Noises Off is a play within a play. A hapless director, a cast of actors stumbling through their parts, a backstage crew trying to keep it all from falling apart and several “showmance” love triangles make this a fast-paced and acrobatic theatrical circus.
The GIANT single-set is central to where the cast and crew are putting together a silly, saucy comedy titled Nothing On. It’s a fantastical farce in which lovers frolic, doors slam, clothes are tossed away and embarrassing hi-jinks ensue. See it as an audience member and then as a fly on the wall backstage where all the mayhem really happens!
Directed by Claude André Giroux, the superb cast includes Ryan Crocker, Tiffany Bishop, Matthew Ip Shaw, Veronica Bonderud, Charity Principe, Jonathon Connelly, Leigh Richards Stewart, Elijah Bamberry, Peter Robbins and Rebecca MacDonald.
This much-loved escapade about the making of a play and all the characters who inhabit the production has been held as the best example of farce anywhere in the world. It will be making its brand new third appearance in Deep Cove from February 22 to March 9, 2024. Performances in the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre run Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm, except Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 pm only. Please note, there is a shuttle bus option from Parkgate Community Centre for the matinee. See website for details. The First Friday is TalkBack with director and cast.
