Hey friends! We are officially a month into summer and what a busy one it has been for me. Sometimes though in the summer, especially when I’m not doing any shows or anything like that, I can fall into a bit of a creative rut. So, I wanted to hop on here and talk about a few things I do throughout the summer to stay active in the arts. And we know I love a good list, so here we go!

First off, we gotta rest.

You all already know how big of an advocate I am for resting and taking time to recover. I don’t know about you all, but this past semester kicked my butt, so once I got home from the summer, I don’t think I did a whole lot of anything the first week I was home for the summer. I unpacked, but that was about it. My body needed the rest and I was so grateful for it.

Reading plays.

I love to read, and I don’t have a whole lot of time to read during the school year. So, during the summer I try to read more plays so I can get to know more plays, and also find new possible acting class material or monologues I can use for auditions. I have found this super helpful, especially once I get back to school and have to start looking for material.

Summer Camp Baby

I am super blessed to be apart of Performing Arts Christian Camp, or PAC camp out at the Green Pastures Christian Retreat Center in Meredosia, Illinois. It is a weekend long camp, where kids 5th-12th grade get the opportunity to learn more about God while also getting to take part in different art forms such as mime, art, drama, music, and dance. My heart is at this camp. I look forward to it all year. The most important work I will ever do is at this camp. I love getting to serve at this camp and it always helps refill my spiritual cup. I love camp season and getting to hang out with everyone I only get to see about once a year. It is such a blessing and I love it so much

Physical activity

In the summer, if I am not physically active in someway, I find myself getting really stiff and then find it hard to jump back into dance classes when I get back to school. So while I’m home, I try to be active at least once a week in some form or capacity. The weekends I’m at camp, that is my physical activity. I am constantly running around when I’m there. When I’m home, I like to go to the gym or take my dog on walks. Really anything that gets my body up and moving always makes me feel good.

Drinking Water

This one sounds kind of silly, but it is so important to stay hydrated. It gets rather hot in the summer, and even though I’m not singing as much as I normally am, it is still so important to be drinking water and staying hydrated.

Watching Theatre in Any Form or Capacity

I love going to see shows in the summer, especially outdoor theatre. I’m fortunate enough that I live in a close vicinity to three outdoor theatres, including the St. Louis Muny, and that I am able to see shows there when I can. I love outdoor theatre so much, I think it is so cool that you can do theatre outdoors and be in nature, under the stars with the summer breeze blowing, I just love it so much. I also love getting to watch musicals that I know and love, or getting to see a show I’ve never seen before. This is a great way to experience new shows and get to know more shows.

These are just a few ways I stay active in theatre over the summer, while also finding down time to relax and do other things I enjoy as well. I hope you all are having a great summer so far. As always, go do great things!
