I love this student organization
This year I get the honor of being the president of my university's chapter of Alpha Psi Omega.
I love this organization and I have loved being a part of it for the past 3 years. I’m going to be sad to leave it this year, but thrilled with the time that I have. I wanted to chat a bit about what this organization is, what my role as president looks like, and how things are going so far. So, without further ado, let's jump on in!
Alpha Psi Omega or APO is a theatre honors fraternity. Our motto is to seek a life useful. Basically what our organization is, is a community of theatre folks who can be there and support each other. We also offer many benefits to being a part of the organization, for example all of our members are eligible to receive audition reimbursements to a certain extent, they also get to attend all of our events for free, and they get to wear another set of cords at graduation. It is also nice to have a community of folks who are in the same degree as you that you can go to for help or support and to hang out with. We host a lot of really amazing events. Each year we host a gender bent cabaret called Bent. We are also hosting a freshmen/first year showcase as well. It is also currently our rush week, and for rush week we are doing tote bag painting, cookie decorating, taking a trip to the zoo and the beach, and we are also doing bracelet making. And we have so much more planned for the semester. We also do service projects and have some of those lined up as well. Overall, our organization does a little bit of everything.
As president, my main job is to make sure things go smoothly and that everyone else on the executive board is doing their jobs. My exec board is truly phenomenal and they have done nothing but great things this year. I am honored to be working with them. I also just help out wherever is needed.
Some recent really cool things APO has been doing is this past week we just had a Zoom masterclass with Cara Rose DiPietro, she was so kind and truly amazing to talk to. She gave us advice about how to manage our careers and take care of ourselves while being in this industry we are in. It was an absolute honor to have her. We also had our Big/Little reveal this week and it was amazing! Big/little is where a current member of APO gets assigned a new member of APO to have a mentor, a friend, and just overall someone to help them out along their way here at college! It was so amazing to see all the new faces and welcome so many new members to the family!
I have never been president of anything before in my life. I was so scared to run and a little more scared once I got elected, but I had nothing to worry about. Once we had our first few meetings and I settled into a groove of things, I’ve been having a lot of fun. The exec board like I said is fantastic, and everything has been great. I love being president.
I truly love this organization. I am considered a legacy member since my mom was a member when she was in college and that makes it mean that much more to me. I can’t wait to see what all this year brings and I can’t wait to see how this organization continues to grow. Go seek a life useful and as always, go do great things.
