To Kill A Mockingbird - 2021 Broadway History , Info & More

Shubert Theatre (Broadway)
225 West 44th St. New York, NY

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning American classic To Kill a Mockingbird comes to Broadway for the first time in a new adaptation by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Bartlett Sher.

This new interpretation of the beloved, iconic American story retells the story of one of literature's towering symbols of integrity and righteousness, Atticus Finch, in a way made even more poignant for today. Told by Atticus' daughter Scout, based on herself, we see a world of pain and inequity through the eyes youthful innocence.

FEATURED REVIEWS FOR To Kill A Mockingbird

Broadway Review: ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’
8 / 10

Against all odds, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Bartlett Sher have succeeded in crafting a stage-worthy adaptation of Harper Lee's classic American novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' The ever-likable Daniels, whose casting was genius, gives a strong and searching performance as Atticus Finch, the small-town Southern lawyer who epitomizes the ideal human qualities of goodness, tolerance and decency. Celia Keenan-Bolger, best remembered for 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' but grown up now, is smart, funny, and entirely convincing as Scout, Atticus's precocious 6-year-old daughter and the narrator of the story. The rest of the large and very fine cast perform their parts with all their hearts, under Sher's impeccably fine-tuned direction.

Review: A Broadway ‘Mockingbird,’ Elegiac and Effective
8 / 10

These are two worthy ideas, if contradictory. In light of racial injustice, accommodation seems to be a white luxury; in light of accommodation, justice seems hopelessly naïve. Perhaps what this beautiful, elegiac version of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' most movingly asks is: Can we ever have both?

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Soars to New Heights in Front of 18,000 Students at Madison Square Garden
by Chloe Rabinowitz - February 28, 2020

Under typical circumstances, it would be a difficult task to judge just how much a piece of theater is affecting an audience. The average age of a theatergoer hovers in the range of 40 to 45 years old, and by then social mores have taken over and hammered in the rules of 'proper' theater etiquette. You may hear measured laughs and gasps or catch a few tears slipping out, but for the most part, instinctual, visceral and verbal reactions are reeled in. But, when you take a Broadway play and put it in front of 18,000 students in one of the world's most famous arenas, the energy rises to match its surroundings. High points are celebrated with deafening cheers, the dislike of characters is vocalized, and the silences are heightened. When Aaron Sorkin's To Kill A Mockingbird became the first ever Broadway play to perform at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, the sheer magnitude of the surroundings and the unbridled energy that comes from 18,000 kids sharing a space made it impossible to forget for even a second that history was unfolding in front of your eyes.
