Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event September 6, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the spring season are Wonder City of the World: New York Travel Posters and The Anatomy of a Movie Poster: The Work of Dawn Baillie. Both exhibits are open through September 8, 2024.
Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions. First Friday Activities for September 6th include:
· 1:00 PM: The Royal Tenenbaums Movie Screening
Inspired by The Anatomy of a Movie Poster: The Work of Dawn Baillie, Poster House will be showing a free screening of Wes Anderson’s classic, The Royal Tenenbaums. Movie goers can also stop by Café des Affiches for exclusive, themed drinks and snacks to accompany the screening.
· 3:00 PM: The Anatomy of a Movie Poster Curatorial Tour
Join Chief Curator Angelina Lippert for a tour of the acclaimed exhibition The Anatomy of a Movie Poster: The Work of Dawn Baillie and explore Dawn Baillie’s involvement with some of the most iconic and beloved posters in modern cinematic history and the evolution of the production of movie posters through an impressive career that has spanned almost four decades.
· 4:00 PM: Collaborative Stop-Motion Animation Workshop
Participants will join teaching artist Paris Baillie for a hands-on, introductory workshop to stop-motion animation. They will learn the basics of stop-motion animation, how to use simple materials, including clay and smartphones, create their own stop-motion animations, and work together to create an animated project.
· 6:00 PM: Styrofoam Block-Printing Workshop
Join teaching artist Fan Kong to create unique Styrofoam stamps inspired by the exhibit Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be invited to (re)imagine the landmarks, monuments, and symbols of their own speculative “wonder city” as the instructor guides them in making designs using Styrofoam (reclaimed polystyrene), cardboard, and other accessible materials and tools. By the end of this workshop, guests will come away with personal stamp(s) related to their favorite cities.
· 7:00 PM: Wonder City Moves: A Celebration of Ballroom
Join Poster House for an unforgettable experience, curated by Relish and featuring talented dancers from renowned houses like Ebony, Balmain, Mugler, and Revlon, and explore the historical context of the fascinating world of ballroom. Inspired by the exhibition Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters participants will be immersed in a display that traces the influence of ballroom dance moves on iconic figures such as Madonna and the popular shows Pose and Legendary.
Free tickets can be reserved online in advance of September 6th . During normal hours, tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, veterans, and seniors. Poster House offers free museum admission through New York City’s public library Culture Pass system.
