Casting for YMT's Summer Season
Hello!
Have you booked your YMT audition?
In January and February we will be travelling to
24 cities in 6 weeks casting for talented young performers and musicians.

It's going to be a wildly creative season of music theatre next summer 2014! We will be staging 9 productions of new work and offering 288 places to young actors and around 80 places to young musicians.

So what are we looking for?
In our performers, we are searching for young people who are watchable, have raw talent, passion and personality - can you work well in a team and bring a real spark to our 2014 company?

We are specifically looking for talented young musicians who can plan an instrument to a grade 7+ standard, and work well as a team to play as part of a pit band, on-stage band or as an actor-musician.

If you are successful at auditions, we will place you in the production which best suits your talents and which needs your skills the most. For the shows we have confirmed so far, here is what we are looking for...
Macbeth
Our version of Shakespere's classic play will be staged in a futuristic East Asian settings, so we particularly welcome auditionees from South and South-east Asian ethnicities - as well as those from white British backgrounds. Macbeth is a massive ensemble show and needs lots of strong singers, contemporary dancers and Grade 7+ instrumentalists. You could be doing all three at the same time on stage - there is no 'pit' orchestra, so all the musicians also act. The solo roles need plenty of older strong boys to play and sing Macbeth, Banquo, Malcom, MacDuff, etc. And there are a number of leading roles for girls - Lady Macbeth and Lady Macduff.

Terry Pratchett's Soul Music
Soul Music is Terry Pratchett's 16th Discworld novel and follows the short-lived but glamorous musical career of 'The Band with Rocks In. We will be recruiting young performers and actor-musicians across the whole age group from 11 to 21. The show will involve two unique elements:

* live rock music played by members of the cast, so we are looking for actors who play lead and bass guitar, kit and percussion and possibly brass
* puppetry to create talking crows, rats and other animals

Miss Interpreted

This year director Ellie Jones (who directed both According to Brian Haw and the film Vanishing Point for us) will take you on a journey into the unknown. She's looking for young women (16+) who are confident, eloquent, opinionated, brimming with the desire to express themselves through theatre, and ready for a challenge. Strong solo singers, budding writers and composers, good ensemble players will all be selected for this show.

Ali and Nino

We are looking for a strong team of older boy and girl performers with powerful voices and a willingness to tackle new styles of singing and movement such as polyphonic choral singing, and some fabulous dancers who can learn a whole new world of Middle Eastern dance such as 'whirling dervish' movement styles. We shall also be working with some extreme puppetry made of 'found' objects and seeking to create some big visual effects. We will also be incorporating elements of middle eastern instrumentation and speech and would welcome applicants from young people with middle eastern backgrounds, language or instrumental skills.

Nine

We've asked composer Pippa Cleary to develop a new show for us this summer working with young people up to the age of 16. Pippa has just completed the fantastic new score to The Secret Life of Adrian Mole aged 13 and 3/4 for Sue Townsend at the Curve Theatre Leicetser and we proposed her for the Arts Foundation Award which she won last year - she's a composer on the way up. So this will be a fantastic experience for younger performers - a chance to create a brand new show with a very talented composer.
