ROLES:
JANE, 59, is married to SAL. They have settled at Paradise Lagoon, an over-55 active community, in order to slow down their lives. Before retirement, JANE had a career in all aspects of theatre and misses having a toe in the theatre world, so she decides she wants to create a production for the community, and ropes SAL in to help her. JANE had a bout of breast cancer several years ago, and some symptoms have recently started to worry her. JANE is very close to her AUNT BEULAH, and is trying to get AUNT BEULAH to move from Maine to Paradise Lagoon.
LOUISE, 72, has Parkinson’s Disease. She lost her daughter to opioid addiction a year ago. She moved to Paradise Lagoon to start over, and, hopefully, to help her with her grief. She has a close relationship with her granddaughter, Sadie, who lives in another state but visits LOUISE regularly. Louise also has a unique sense of humor. She is in a grief therapy group with SAL, which is how she heard about the production of Wrinkles the Musical. SAL encouraged her to join the cast. LOUISE teaches movement to other “Parkies”.
MS D, 79, Jewish, from Brooklyn, speaks with a Brooklyn accent. A former showgirl at the Boom Boom Room, which is where she met and became best friends with PAM. They had a falling out and haven’t seen each other in 50 years. MS D is tough on the exterior, but soft hearted when you get to know her. She has had three previous husbands. Knows VALERIE from pickle ball.
DIANE, 85, is a former tap dance teacher. She moved to Paradise Lagoon after her husband died. They had a good marriage. DIANE is losing her hearing which causes her to often misunderstand what is going on. This is combined with some early dementia that seems to be happening (misplacing of objects, remembering things). VALERIE is her neighbor and often helps her out with rides, shopping, etc.
VALERIE, 64, a southern divorcee whose seeming flakiness belies an inner depth. Her husband left her for another woman. She is now dating a man many years her junior. Funny personality. Valerie is learning to be authentic, no longer someone who does what she thinks is expected of her. She lives next door to DIANE, and often helps DIANE out with rides, shopping, etc. Knows MS D from pickle ball.
PAM, 77, former dancer at the Boom Boom Room where she and MS D met and became best friends before they had a falling out. Pam has always felt guilty for abandoning MS D to run off and marry Gerald. So after Gerald’s death and 50 years, PAM googles MS D, sees she is living at Paradise Lagoon, and decides to move to Paradise Lagoon, herself, and hopefully make amends and re-ignite the friendship. Gerald was physically and emotionally abusive and kept a tight reign over PAM, so PAM never made other friends. PAM is originally from England and speaks with a British accent. She feels she has finally been freed to live her own life, make her own decisions, go where she wants to go, be where she wants to be.
SAL, 61, a former folk rock star in the vein of Joni Mitchell and Carol King. Married to JANE. Left the music business because it became too much being on the road and away from JANE, and too much drinking and dealing with groupies. JANE has convinced SAL to do the music for the production of Wrinkles The Musical. SAL has always known she was a lesbian, but she and JANE got together at a time when they felt they had to stay in the closet. Now they’re legally married and much freer. They have been role models for many young lesbians.
SAL knows LOUISE from a grief therapy group and encouraged LOUISE to audition for the production. SAL is in the therapy group because she is worried about JANE’S possible recurrence of cancer.
AUNT BEULAH, 89, is JANE’S aunt and lives in Wayne, Maine. Speaks with a down-east Maine accent. Widowed. JANE is trying to get her to come live at Paradise Lagoon but AB is adamantly refusing until JANE’S illness brings AB to Paradise Lagoon to help take care of JANE. AB is quite a character, eccentric, an artist, and very independent.
NOTE: AUNT BEULAH appears only in Act 2, and JANE only in Act 1.
This makes dual casting an option.
CASTING NOTE: The theater, writers and director are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. As such, we encourage performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, abilities and ages to sign up for the auditions.
