PRODUCTION INFO
Directed by Christian O’Neill, MA, MFA

PERFORMANCE DATES: March 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31

THIS IS AN UNPAID, NON-EQUITY PRODUCTION.

DRAMA | Set in 15th century France, Saint Joan follows a country girl whose mysterious visions propel her into elite circles. When the nation’s rulers become threatened by her popularity and influence, they unite to bring her down – landing her on trial for her life. This epic play dramatizes the complex relationship between society’s visionaries and the powerful forces they threaten. This will be a modern-dress production.

AUDITION INFO
For auditions, a short (1-2 minute) monologue is strongly preferred, especially if auditioning for one of the larger roles. Sides will be available in lieu of a monologue. We are looking for actors capable of profound emotional access and intense vulnerability. Please come ready to make strong choices!

AVAILABLE ROLES
All roles are open.

Joan: Female, late teens-late 20’s
A force of nature – commanding, confident, charming, and utterly unstoppable. Filled with all the optimism and stubbornness of youth. Also capable of expressing grace, holiness and profound vulnerability.

Father Cauchon: Male, 40+
Powerful bishop. A true believer. Steadfast and rigid in his thinking, but not without compassion.

Earl of Warwick: Male, 40+
Cold, calculating, politically-driven nobleman. A staunch, sneering advocate for the 1%. Displays redemption in the end.

Charles (The Dauphin): Male, 20s-30s
Weak-willed, insecure young king who wishes he was anything but. Bookish, tired of being bullied. Desperate to escape his dire situation and save his own skin.

Bluebeard: Male, 30s+
A sneaky, creepy aristocrat. Sharp sarcastic wit, general disdain for humanity.

Jack Dunois: Male, 25-30s
Brave, handsome, affable soldier. A hero type. Practical but with an underlying love for beauty.

John de Stogumber: Male, 30s-50s
A naïve churchman who initially sees the world in simplistic terms. Undergoes a dramatic, emotional transformation after (spoiler alert) watching Joan burn.

Archbishop: Male, 50+
High-ranking bishop, cynical and calculating. Sees religion as a means of keeping order within society and takes his role seriously; may or may not actually believe in any of it.

Ladvenu: Male, 20s
A young priest. The stark opposite of the archbishop: idealistic, sympathetic and compassionate.

John LeMaitre (Inquisitor): Male, 40+
A grandfatherly priest, comfortable in his authoritarian role, at times quite zealous. Capable of making hard decisions for the greater good.

John D'Estivet: Male, 30s+
A shark of an attorney. Exacting, knows how to go in for the kill. Determined to win.

Robert de Baudricourt: Male, 30s-40s
A provincial captain. Boorish middle-manager type, all bark and no bite.

Poulengey: Male, 50s-60s
A dignified, experienced soldier who knows how to tolerate Baudricourt’s endless BS.

Tremouille: Male, 50+
A nasty vulture of a Lord Chamberlain, deeply resentful of Joan’s influence over Charles.

Courcelles: Male, 20s+
A zealous, comically petty young priest, obsessed with charging Joan with stealing the bishop’s horse.

La Hire: Male, 30s+
A veteran solder. Hard military type. Believes wholeheartedly in Joan.

The Executioner: Male, 40s+
A no-nonsense corrections officer. Won’t lose sleep over executing convicts. Demonstrates a softer side late in the play.

An English Soldier: Male, 30s+
A common soldier, rough-around-the-edges. A good-natured, drinking-buddy type.

Chorus
An ensemble of 7-8 performers who serve in a variety of ensemble roles throughout the show and also perform running crew functions. Some spoken lines divided among them (including those of the Duchess and the Gentleman).
