ABOUT THE SHOW:
“Oh the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper!
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many thinks. Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
THE CAT IN THE HAT
The essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. As the story’s omniscient narrator, The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping JOJO to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together. Physically adept actor who is able to play many comic cameos and is comfortable improvising with an audience. Strong mover.
Male or female.
Vocal range: Tenor/Baritone (top: F4, bottom: F2)
JOJO
The Mayor's child, he or she is a Who that is always finding trouble. Bright, creative, and inadvertently mischievous. Possesses a wildly expansive imagination and finds solace in his or her friendship with Horton.
Male or female, should play ages 8 to 12.
Vocal range: Soprano/alto (top: C5, bottom: Ab3)
HORTON THE ELEPHANT
Our story’s main character, he is a compassionate and gentle elephant, who is commonly misunderstood because of his larger size. He is protective and loving of all creatures in the jungle. He is steadfast and responsible and always tried to to the right thing for his friends. Imaginative, receptive, to the world around him, very un-self-conscious. Horton’s view of the world never changes - he believes in it’s goodness.
Male
Vocal range: Tenor/Baritone(top: F4, bottom: A2)
GERTRUDE McFUZZ
Horton’s one-feathered-tail bird neighbor. Gertrude is sweet and timid, kind and loyal, and very self-conscious. She is very aware or her shortfalls, and that her one-feather tail isn’t perfect. Should be able to move well.
Female
Vocal range: Soprano (top: F5, bottom: F3)
MAYZIE LA BIRD
The most beautiful bird in all of the jungle. Selfish and vain, and oblivious to her own self-centered ways. She relies on her talent of manipulation and intoxicating beauty to navigate her way through life. Strong dancer.
Male or Female
Vocal range: Soprano/Alto (top: Eb5, bottom: G3)
THE SOUR KANGAROO
The “leader” of the jungle. She is loud, brassy, a lot of fun, and stubbornly set in her ways. A caring mother, but unabashedly sassy and soulful. Should move well.
Male or Female
Vocal range: Soprano/Alto (top: F5, bottom: F#3)
GENERAL GENGUS KHAN SCHMITZ
Bursting with pride at the military academy he runs and the boys and girls he turns out. A comic character, as he is very misguided, but unaware of that fact.
Male
Vocal range: Baritone
THE BIRD GIRLS
A flamboyant “girl group” of three birds who love to sing, dance, and perform. They love to tell stories embellished by their melodious voices, live in the moment, and embody the mood and feeling of whatever environment of the time. They act as a Greek chorus, being the narrators when the Cat in the Hat is not around. Must be strong dancers.
Females
Vocal ranges: Mixed
THE WICKERSHAM BROTHERS
Live to impress the world with their strength and prowess. Impulsive bad-boys who like to monkey around, creating havoc for fun. Work as henchmen for the Sour Kangaroo.
