Maryland Ensemble Theatre will be holding auditions for the fifth show in its current Mainstage season, the world premiere musical, Oedipus Rox!. MET Artistic Director Tad Janes will direct. The original musical is based on the tragedy by Sophocles but Oedipus Rox! is more than just the tragic story of a famous King. The play goes beneath the surface and explores Oedipus the man and the decisions he makes that lead to his demise. It is both heartwarming and raunchy. We watch Oedipus do everything he can to save the two things he loves the most; his family and his city. However, in saving one he will destroy the other. The musical features a script by MET Company Member Sarah Shulman, original music by MET Company Member Thom Huenger, and lyrics by Sarah Shulman and Thom Huenger. Shulman and Huenger previously collaborated on the award-winning play The Young Olympians, which premiered at Maryland Ensemble Theater in 2012 before touring to Fringe Festivals in DC and NYC.
The show will run for sixteen performances over four weeks from April 7 through May 1. It will run every Thursday through Sunday at Maryland Ensemble Theatre, located at 31 W Patrick Street in downtown Frederick’s historic FSK Hotel.
The auditions will take place on October 25 and 28 from 7pm – 10pm at Maryland Ensemble Theatre. No appointments or time slots will be reserved; auditioners will be seen on a first come first seen basis. Actors should prepare 16-32 bars preferably from a contemporary musical. Piano accompaniment will be provided. Attendees may also be asked to perform a cold reading from the script. All roles will be paid a stipend.
