ABOUT THE SHOW NEXT TO NORMAL is a Pulitzer-Prize winning pop/rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt tells the story of a mother, Diane Goodman, who struggles with bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. This contemporary musical is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. With provocative lyrics and a thrilling score, this musical shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact.
NEXT TO NORMAL is a deeply moving piece of theatre that will provide a wonderful opportunity for performers to explore dramatic material and showcase vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score.
NEXT TO NORMAL was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2009 and won three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Alice Ripley). It became the eighth musical to win Tony Awards and also win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, following on the heels of “Rent” in 1996.

AUDITION DETAILS Prepare a vocal selection, preferably 15-20 bars long, showing your range in a modern show. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided. CD tracks with no lead vocals will be permitted at this audition. There will be a dance audition. Please wear something you can move well in. You may be asked to sing and/or read from the script. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Non-traditional casting will be considered.
The callback audition will involve dancing as well as singing from the score. Callbacks will be held Sunday, January 12 at 1pm.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

DAN – (able to play 30-40 years old) Diana's husband and father to Gabe and Natalie. An architect, he is handsome and genuine and constantly tired. He provides a constant support for his family as he fights to keep his wife's mind and illness stable. A belabored, dedicated father> Vocal range - High baritone/tenor to A.
GABE - (able to play 18-21 years old) Diana and Dan's son, he is dashing, gentle, bright and playful. He can be both an angel and a demon to his mother, who idolizes him as a superhero. Vocal range - rock tenor to a B with a falsetto and comfortable mix.
NATALIE - (able to play 16 years old) Diana and Dan's daughter. She is attractive, strong and tries to be perfect. She is a classically trained pianist who takes refuge in the practice room. Vocal range - belt/mix to an E
HENRY- (able to play 17 years old) He is a jazz musician, romantic, stoner, slacker philosopher king. A classmate of Natalie and eventually her boyfriend, he supports her during one of the roughest times in her life. Vocal range High baritone/tenor to an A
DOCTOR MADDEN / DOCTOR FINE - (able to play 30 years old) Diana's doctor - assured, a rock star of psychiatry - 'on the young side' of ageless. Vocal range - high baritone/tenor to A with a rock sound
