PREPARE
Please prepare two contrasting songs, one 32 bars and one 16 bars. One should be from standard musical theater and another from contemporary musical theatre repertoires. Those auditioning for the Voice of Audrey II should since something more in the rock genre. You may only be asked to sing one song, so do the “better one” first. An accompanist will be provided; bring sheet music in the key you will be singing. You may bring pre-recorded accompaniment on CD or Iphone/Android equivalent although we would prefer that you sing with the accompanist. Be prepared to dance at the initial audition.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Seymour: Tenor, A2 to G4, 25-35, a geeky, insecure, naïve, put-upon, florist’s clerk. Above all, he’s a sweet and well-meaning little man, somewhat shy, awkward; lacking in social skills. He is not a silly, prat-falling nerd, and therefore should not be played as the hero of a Jerry Lewis film.
Audrey: Mezzo, A3 to D5, sweet and vulnerable. If you took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe and Goldie Hawn, removed their education and feelings of self-worth, dressed them in spiked heels and a low-cut black dress, and then shook them up in a test tube to extract what’s sweetest and most vulnerable – that’d be Audrey.
Mr. Mushnik: Baritone, A2 to F4, 40-60, a failure of an East Side florist. He seldom smiles but often sweats. Jewish middle-class New York. He has pretty much one thing at his core – self-preservation. He has somewhat fatherly tendencies towards Audrey, but oddly enough, NOT towards Seymour, who he eventually adopts. His personality has the ability to be conniv¬ing and dark, but then turn on a dime and be sweet, happy and the life of the room.
Orin: Baritone, G2, to E4, A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. He is not, however, a leftover from the movie version of Grease. Think instead of an egotistical pretty-boy – all got up like a greaser but thinking like an insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer. Also plays A Voice, not unlike God’s, Wino #2, Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip and Patrick Martin.
Voice of the Plant: Bari/Tenor; A2 to G4, the sound is a cross between Otis Redding, Barry White and Wolfman Jack. Think of a street-smart, funky, conniving villain – Rhythm and Blues’ answer to Richard the Third.
Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon: 18-30, low alto to supremely high belt, must sound funky, soulful, jazzy and huge with every note sung. Three female street urchins who function as participants in the action and a Greek Chorus outside it. They’re young, hip, smart, and the only people in the whole cast who really know what’s going on. In the “Greek Chorus” capacity, they occasionally sing to their audience directly. Would prefer diverse ethnicity for these roles, but vocal and acting abilities take precedence.
Puppeteer: Experienced puppeteer who will manipulate Audrey 3 and 4. Will also play Wino #1 in “Downtown”.
