The Age of Aquarius dawns again! It’s the summer of love, and a group of young Americans are looking to change the world. Hair, the legendary rock musical, bursts onto the stage with its Grammy award-winning score. Celebrate “harmony and understanding” with Broadway’s first great rock musical. Directing this Phoenix production will be local artist and Phoenix alumnus Remember Jones. Remember Jones began his performance journey at Phoenix Productions in 1998 and now tours the country as lead singer, songwriter, and award-winning performer as leader of his eponymous band.
Adults, aged 18 and up of all ethnicities, gender expressions, cultural heritage / background and body types are encouraged to audition.
Audition candidates should be strong singers and come prepared to sing a song from the show in the show key, or a song in a similar musical theatre style. It is preferred that all audition candidates use accompaniment. Audition candidates should bring their own sheet. A resume is helpful, but not required.
Audition will be held July 5th, 6th and 7th at 7:00PM at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center (59 Chestnut Street, Red Bank, NJ 07701 one block from the Red Bank train station).
An additional audition will be held at Lakehouse Music Academy, 619 Lake Avenue in Asbury park at 7PM on Monday, July 11.
Actors not available to audition in person are encouraged to submit a video audition to auditions@phoenixredbank.com. There will be a movement component to the audition. Callbacks will be held July 12th (time TBD), if needed.
Rehearsals will begin in August and are typically held 3 weekday evenings and one weekend day. Not all cast members will be called for each rehearsal.
NOTE: The ages listed are approximate. Actors cast should be able to “play” these ages. In reference to the character descriptions below, the characters in this show are on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions.
However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, gender queer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with. We also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.

Character Descriptions:
Berger – Male, 18-29. Charismatic and anti-establishment leader of the Tribe. Edgy and high energy, sings “Donna” and “Hair;” Vocal Range: high baritone
Woof – Male, 18-29. Soft mannered and spiritual. Exploratory of his sexuality with a strong admiration for both Berger and Mick Jagger. Sings “Sodomy;” Vocal Range: tenor with rock falsetto
Hud – African American, Male, 18-29 Unabashed bordering militant with a big heart. Making his voice heard in a world unwilling to listen. Sings “I’m Black” and “Ain’t Got No;” Vocal Range: bass/baritone
Claude – Male, 18-29. Berger’s softer spoken best friend. Unsure of whether or not he will follow the draft into Vietnam. Somewhat of a Christ figure in the Tribe. Sings “Manchester England” and “Where Do I Go;” Vocal Range: high baritone – tenor
Jeanie – Pregnant, mystical, She is the mother hen of the tribe and keeps tabs on everyone. Strong comedy skills. Vocal Range: Alto
Dionne – African American, Female, 18-29. Vivacious and free spirited. Spreads love freely as she sees fit. Sings “Aquarius;” Vocal Range: strong belt
Crissy – Female, 18-29. One of the younger and more naïve members of the tribe. She is hung up on a man she’ll most likely never encounter again. Vocal Range: high folksy voice
Sheila – Female, 18-29. NYU student, protestor, demonstrator, radical but with a soft side. Sings “Easy to Be Hard” and “Good Morning Starshine”. Vocal Range: high belt
Margaret Meade/Dad – Can be older member of tribe or singular actor. Must be versatile and able to portray both Claude’s pro war father and a curious female tourist. Very strong comedic skills and a strong falsetto.
Mom – Female tribe member who doubles as Claude’s neurotic mother. Strong comedic acting. No specific singing required
Hubert – Can be older male or member of tribe. Margaret Meade’s unsuspecting and doting husband. No specific singing required
Ensemble – Persons aged 18-29. All types, strong versatile singer/actors who move well to play multiple roles; open on vocal range. There are numerous other songs and solos performed by Tribe members not in the named cast.
