CURIOUS GEORGE & THE GOLDEN MEATBALL:
Music by John Kavanagh
Lyrics & Book by Jeremy Desmon

The musical is based on the children’s book series of Curious George. All-You-Can-Eat Meatball Day comes just once a year. George has been waiting all month for that day, a day almost bigger than his birthday! Determined to help his friend, Chef Pisghetti, George goes on a mission to enter the chef's meatballs in the world-famous Golden Meatball Contest in Rome.

Lower Ossington Theatre is committed to gender equity and cultural diversity in all of our practices. We strongly encourage submissions from all performers interested in being involved with this production.

The breakdown for characters is listed below. Please choose 1 to 2 tracks that you are interested in auditioning for, and prepare the sides accordingly. Please note, within each track there are sometimes a couple of roles (i.e. in Track #5 Netti/ Chef O Malley) If you wish you can audition for 2 tracks, which may mean you will be reading for 3-4 roles. ALL ACTORS MUST ALSO AUDITION FOR THE TRACK OF CURIOUS GEORGE, along with the 1-2 tracks they wish to read for. Please also prepare an up-tempo song that shows strong character choices:

Track #1 - Curious George – Non-Singing Role
Prepare Sides A & B
George is a lovable, innocent monkey that always seems to get themselves into trouble. As their name implies, they are curious, and often this curiosity gets them into situations that they have to figure their way out of. This character will be in a mascot suit for the show, so the actor playing the role has to be able to physicalize the intention behind ‘gibberish’ lines they are given, with body movement, and vocalizations. Curious George never speaks, but ‘chitters’. Chitter are vocalized sounds that convey intentions and sentiment of words, in close to the same number of syllables scripted, without saying the words. If you start with the words on the page, remove the consonants, and in a higher, youthful voice, click the sound a bit toward ‘monkey’, and away from ‘human’, (raising the back of the tongue a bit), you’ll find the right ‘chitter’.

Track #2 – “Man in the Yellow Hat” – Tenor
Prepare Sides B, C & E
“The Man in the Yellow Hat” is a kind, loving person who has a very nurturing relationship with George. Their relationship is positive and supportive. If you are familiar with Sesame Street and you understand the behavior of the human characters on the show as they relate to the puppets of Sesame Street, you will understand the dynamic of the relationship between “Man in the Yellow Hat” and George.

Track #3 – Chef Pisghetti/ Dramatic Announcer – High Baritone
Prepare Sides C & G
Chef Pisghetti is a kind, well intentioned Italian Chef who knows how to make great meatballs! They love their craft, and are committed to providing the highest quality dining experience to their customers. They are a great friend to George. (has an Italian accent)

Dramatic Announcer
The dramatic announcer is ‘that person’ we hear, but never see, that does all of the announcing and introducing before every game show and late-night talk show on TV.

Track #4 – Phinneas T Lightspeed – Tenor
Prepare Side H
Phinneas T Lightspeed is a fast-talking salesperson who has invented a meatball making machine. They are trying to hawk this machine ‘a la Harold Hill’ during the scene you have been given.

Track #5 – Netti/Chef O’Malley – Soprano – Belt
Prepare Sides C& D
Netti is Chef Pisgetti’s trusty assistant chef. They are warm, generous, and a dutiful assistant to the Chef. Has an Italian accent
Chef O’Malley is a chef that competes with George during the meatball contest. They have an Irish accent. Should be significantly different in character choices than Netti.

Track #6 – Doorman/ Frankie Sidecar – Alto- Belt
Prepare Sides E & F
Doorman, is, as the name suggests, a doorperson at an apartment building in New York. They are always willing to help in any situation, and get very involved in helping George to succeed at winning the meatball contest.

Frankie Sidecar is a swanky 1950’s night club singer, a la Dean Martin. They act as the MC for the meatball contest George enters.

Preparation for slides: While you are not expected to have completely memorized the text you have been given, please be very comfortable with the dialogue, enough so that you can lift your eyes from the page at times, and have made strong choices about how the scenes should be played when in audition.

You will be asked to stay for up to an hour and a half when you audition. We will hear you sing individually, and then you will be brought in, in groups, to read the sides with others
