CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES - The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre

With the opening Camelot and the theatre’s 2023 Season, The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre has announced auditions for its spring production of the musical comedy Church Basement Ladies. Auditions will be held at the theatre on Monday, February 6th beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Those auditioning should bring a headshot and resume, as well as 16 bars of prepared music and be ready to sing and read from the script. All roles are non-union paying. A list of roles being cast can be found on the theatre’s website,
www.wayoffbroadway.com. No appointment is necessary and an accompanist will be provided.

Way Off Broadway’s production of Church Basement Ladies will run March 31st through May 20th with performances every Friday and Saturday evening, and matinees on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of each month. A special matinee performance has been added for Mother’s Day on May 14th.

Rehearsals will begin shortly after auditions and be held two to three evenings a week, Sunday – Thursday. Beginning the week of March 26th, rehearsals will be every evening leading up to Opening Night.

In the show, audiences find themselves in 1965 rural Minnesota and the ladies of the local Lutheran church fortify their flock with love, wisdom, and the food they prepare in the church’s basement kitchen. In Church Basement Ladies, we meet the pastor, three cooks, and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation. This funny musical comedy sees the four women handle a Lutefisk Dinner, a funeral, an Easter Fundraiser, and, of course, a wedding.

Based on Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson’s book Growing Up Lutheran, first published in 1997, Church Basement Ladies premiered in 2005 at the Plymouth Playhouse in Plymouth, Minnesota. The show was so popular with audiences that it went on to spawn seven sequels and a prequel. Most of which also premiered at the Plymouth Playhouse prior to touring the United States.

Church Basement Ladies has become an audience favorite among regional theatres with well over three million people seeing the musical and its sequels to date.

Based on Growing Up Lutheran by Janet Letnes and Suzann Nelson, Church Basement Ladies was written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke, with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen. Way Off Broadway’s production is music directed by Jordan B. Stocksdale and directed by Bill Kiska.
