Casting Notice: BOY by Anna Ziegler
Synopsis: “Inspired by a true story, BOY explores the complicated terrain of trying to find love in a new body, and the inextricable bonds between doctor and patient. In the 1960s, a well-intentioned doctor convinces the parents of a male infant to raise their son as a girl after a terrible accident. Two decades later, the repercussions of that choice continue to unfold.” - Anna Ziegler, BOY playwright
Directed by Rena Gavigan, produced by Dot Luongo & Rhinebeck Theatre Society

Character Descriptions:
Casting note from the Director: One of the main themes in this play is gender. I am interested in telling this story with trans and/or genderqueer voices. I believe the most authentic way to cast the production would be with an actor who has experienced a similar journey. The pronouns included below only refer to the characters as they are written.
Adam Turner: to play both Adam (as a young adult) and Samantha (as a child ages 6-14). Adam (he/him) is early-mid 20’s, gentle, earnest, troubled and self-educated. This character goes on a journey of gender identity.
Samantha (she/her) is precocious, aware, and questioning. Adam and Jenny kiss.
Dr. Wendell Barnes: (he/him) Samantha’s psychiatrist. 40s-60s, highly educated and privileged. Warm and genial, passionate about his work and ideals, yet can be myopic regarding his own beliefs and career.
Jenny Lafferty: (she/her) Adam’s girlfriend. Early-mid 20s, a bit toughened and wary, yet still hopeful for wonderful things. Single mom. Smarter and more perceptive than she lets on. Wants to be a good mother. Jenny and Adam kiss.
Trudy Turner: (she/her) Adam’s mother. 30s-50s, warm, lost, and hopeful. Trying to make sense of a confusing world and doing her best.
Doug Turner: (he/him) Adam’s father. 30s-50s, a man of not very many words, in over his head, just trying to get by, troubled.
