About the Play

From the script: This is a play about real people who are really, truly, honestly dealing with the toughest thing there is to deal with in life: love. The play consists of 8 short plays featuring residents of the mythical, magical Northern Maine town of Almost.

Cast Of Characters

Almost, Maine tells the stories of 10 men and 9 women, typically played by 2 men and 2 women. For this production we are looking to cast 6-8 actors who are or can play late 20s to 40s. Playwright John Cariani describes the characters this way:

The people of Almost, Maine are not hicks. [...] They are not quaint, quirky eccentrics. [...] They are not Down Easters. [...] They are ordinary people. (It's their situations that are odd and extraordinary.) They work hard for a living. They are extremely dignified. They are honest and true. [...] They are not glib. But this does not mean they are dumb. They're very smart. [...] What makes these people special is their guilelessness. [...] When they speak, they do so simply, honestly, truly, and from the heart. [...]

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to attend both audition sessions?
No. Attend just one audition session.

What if I can't attend either session?
If you would like to audition but cannot attend either of the audition sessions, please notify us so we can let you know if additional audition opportunities are made available.

When are callbacks?
TBD. If you are needed at callbacks, you will be notified either at the first auditions or in the following week. [See
Demystifying Callbacks for more about callbacks.]

Do I need to bring a head shot and resume?
No. However, if you have them do bring them. It will save you time completing the audition form. [See
Audition Form]

What is the rehearsal schedule?
The schedule will be tailored to the availability of the cast and director and the needs of the play. Rehearsals will likely begin in early August. We typically rehearse three times a week until the week leading up to the performance, and every night from the Sunday before we open through opening night (September 7-10). Typically rehearsals are two evenings and one weekend afternoon and are 2-3 hours long.

Do I have to prepare a monologue for auditions?
No.

What happens at auditions?
When you arrive, a greeter will have paperwork for you to fill out that will tell the directors a little about your skills and experience with theater. [Save time by completing the
Audition Form in advance and bringing it with you to auditions.] We'll see auditioners somewhat in the order we receive their completed paperwork. We may see actors either individually or in pairs or small groups. In the audition you will be asked to cold read a bit of dialog from the script for the director. These excerpts will be provided when you arrive for you to review before you meet with the director.
