Student Blogger talks about how burnout has affected her life as a student.
At some point in your life, you may experience something called burnout. Burnout can be described as emotional exhaustion, both mentally and physically. Burnout can make it difficult for people to do activities and tasks to the best of their ability. Or it can make you unenthusiastic to do an activity or task.
Burnout is a very common concept in today's society, and many people face it throughout their lives. In my life this fall semester, I experienced burnout. For me, this semester has been particularly difficult because it is my first year in college, and I have had to adjust my schedule tremendously. Despite only taking three classes this semester, I have had to adjust how I study for my classes. Because my classes all average about two hours, it has been a struggle for me to adjust how much I study and prepare for my classes.
I particularly struggled with chemistry this semester because of this. My chemistry class this semester had a lot of information that I had to learn and memorize. At the beginning of the class, the workload seemed manageable, and it seemed like it wouldn’t be that difficult. It didn’t seem that difficult to me because in high school I was highly successful with chemistry and science in general, but then I realized this class was much more difficult than I thought it would be.
At first, I was doing well in the class, doing all my homework, but one issue I faced early was that I didn’t know how much to study and how much material to memorize. Because of this, even though I studied, I was not studying enough, which I quickly realized when I took my first test and did not do as well as I had hoped. After this, things took a turn for the worse. I was doing well in my other classes, math, and English, but in chemistry, it got so difficult for me to study for this class because I just had to memorize so much information in such little time that it got very difficult for me.
Despite trying my hardest to come back to the class, it just got harder and harder for me to succeed because of my poor studying habits. Because of my poor studying habits, I did not do well in the class every day. When I went to my chemistry class, it felt terrible, and I just didn’t want to learn anything new. But what I learned from this experience is that sometimes you have to fail and learn from your failures. Not doing well in this class has taught me about the importance of failing and learning from your mistakes.
Since it is my first year in college, there are bound to be learning curves and mistakes. I am grateful for the fact that I can retake this class, and instead of receiving a bad grade, I can retake it for a better grade. This experience has taught me that mistakes help you grow as a person and that if you fail, you can always come back and be better.
