Stage Operations Manager - American Repertory Theater

Job Summary



Directs all aspects of stage operations for and advises on rigging needs for student performances in ART spaces



Position Description

Works with the entire stage department to implement designs as directed

Staff Supervision and Management

Hires and supervises permanent Stage Operations staff, and overhires to accomplish maintenance, load-ins, the show runs, strikes, and outside events as needed

Budget

Estimates show expenses based on designs and tracks department expenses

Submits regular budget reports and weekly payroll

Production Responsibilities

Responsible for rigging plots for all A.R.T. shows, in collaboration with other Production Department Heads

Maintain stock of rigging materials

Supervises and inspects installation of all rigging

In conjunction with the Assistant Stage Supervisor, develop schedule for loadins, tech, and previews; take and supervise execution of tech notes

Plans, supervises and participates in maintenance and repair of shows in performance

Work with other department heads to facilitate loadin, tour preparation, loadouts, and long-term storage

Advises & assist on rigging installs for student shows

Facilities, Equipment, Stock

Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance and inspections on all tools, rigging equipment, and soft goods; seek outside contractors for repairs or inspections as needed

Ensures the safety and cleanliness of performance spaces at all times

Maintains stock of commonly needed hardware

Plans and manages backstage maintenance, improvements, and purchase of stage equipment in consultation with other members of the technical staff.

Communication

Maintains clear communication with other production departments about rigging and backstage needs

In conjunction with Assistant, stay in regular communication with run crew and respond to rehearsal and performance reports

Distribute Rigging and Backstage plots

Training and Meetings

Manage or delegate training plans and meeting schedules for stage staff

Attend training sessions and shop/company meetings as required



Basic Qualifications



Advanced knowledge of theatrical rigging techniques. For non-certified ETCP candidates, the A.R.T. will sponsor this certification.

Advanced knowledge in the use and maintenance of hand, power, and stationary tools relevant to Stage Operations

Advanced Rigging and safety supervisory experience. For non-certified OSHA 30 candidates, the A.R.T. will sponsor this certification.

Experience with Theatrical Scenery and Prop construction techniques

Ability to read technical drawings, and apply arithmetic and geometry to everyday Rigging problem solving

Ability to communicate with kindness and clarity; fostering a collaborative environment

Conflict resolution skills - diffusing tension, navigating difficult conversations, mediating resolutions

Ability to adapt and quickly communicate changes



Additional Qualifications and Skills



Experience managing backstage environment

Class D driver’s license

Comfortable driving a 26’ truck in an urban environment

Automation experience



Working Conditions



A.R.T’s theater space is a multistory building without an elevator, with work taking place on all levels. The Stage Operations Supervisor may be asked to move scenery weighing upwards of 70 lbs and other materials to and from storage or around the building, as well as loading and unloading material from trucks and vans (both at a loading dock and from the street). They may also assist in the installation of rigging and loading of 40lb stage weights into counter-weight arbors. During load-in and strike, work may take place on ladders, genies, and the steel grating of the grid, 60’ above deck, which is accessed via a 78-step spiral staircase

This job requires the ability to stay in a stationary position for long periods of time occasionally, with periods of intense movement. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, strength, coordination, and stamina. This position can require night and weekend work, particularly during tech and previews of shows

This job works both indoors and outdoors depending on the weather
