Seeking versatile actors who are experienced and/or comfortable with character creation, improvisation, audience interaction, immersive theater and non-traditional venues. High energy, comedic timing, and switching seamlessly between characters. We will be casting against gender and other stereotypes for these traditional storybook characters.
We are seeking a core company of 10-12 actors for the launch of a brand-new show opening in NYC this spring. This is a new production with opportunity for long-term expansion. The show will be starting with a series of pop up appearances, festivals, and short-term engagements across boroughs in bars, event spaces, lofts, festivals and non-traditional spaces. The long-term goal is to be an open-ended weekly run, with the location TBD. We will be double casting most roles for show rotation and cast well-being. Special consideration and priority for actors with special skills such as singing, dancing, juggling, physical talents, puppetry, etc.. We wish to assemble a diverse group of performers, each contributing their distinct style and creative talent to our ensemble. Becoming a member of our vibrant troupe means joining a rotating cast, working closely with the directors to shape your track, expressing your individuality, and highlighting your unique strengths as a performer.
The show features alcohol and simulation of alcohol, adult language, adult themes, and some adult content including bawdy humor and sex-positive humor. The show may also feature some fight choreography and simulated violence. We have a professional fight choreographer and a consent-forward and intimacy-trained direction team.
Show Description: Get ready for a wild ride with Fcked Up Fairytales, where classic fairy tales collide with modern chaos and you’re in control! Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are back, reinventing their lost and most beloved stories with jaw-dropping, contemporary flair. Dive into Hansel and Gretel as a thrilling manga saga, The White Snake reimagined as a raunchy slapstick comedy, and Rumpelstiltskin transformed into a gripping film noir. Experience Rapunzel’s high-octane spy action adventure and brace yourself for Little Red Riding Hood's spine-chilling horror adaptation. Here’s the twist: each night, the show rotates and the audience helps determine which three stories will be told. With interactive and immersive elements, plus drinks to keep the fun flowing, you’ll have the chance to choose the adventure and be part of the action. Will these fairy tales stand up to their modern makeovers? Join us and shape the story yourself!
Character Breakdown:
Track 1: Narrator: Wilhelm Grimm
Any Gender, Any Race, 21-50s
Should be particularly comfortable with audience and improvisation interaction work.
Will be simulating and/or consuming light amounts of alcohol depending on rehearsal outcomes.
The storyteller, guiding the audience through the chaos of the fairy tales with wit and charm. Wilhelm is sarcastic, clever, and often breaks the fourth wall to interact with the audience.
The narrators also act as “ringleader” and keeps the show and ensemble on track, and the show flowing.
Track 2: Narrator: Jacob Grimm
Any Gender, Any Race, 21-50s
Should be particularly comfortable with audience and improvisation interaction work.
Will be simulating and/or consuming light amounts of alcohol depending on rehearsal outcomes.
The idealist narrator, often the more romantic or optimistic of the two. Jacob is less cynical than Wilhelm, and often tries to make sense of the chaos around them, though they are frequently undermined by the events and characters. As with Wilhelm, Jacob can be portrayed by any gender, offering a more complex interpretation of the “Grimm” brothers. The narrators also act as “ringleader” and keeps the show and ensemble on track, and the show flowing.
Track 3: The Hero: Hansel/Servant/Greedy King/Prince/Woodsman
Male identifying/Presenting, Trans or Non-Binary, Any Race, 21-40s
Should be comfortable with physical movement, dance or fight choreography.
The hero figure of the tale. While traditionally brave and noble, this archetype can take on a wide range of characteristics—from the heroic woodsman to the morally questionable greedy king.
This role often drives the action but breaks the stereotype of doing the saving… and is often the one being saved.
Track 4: The Princess: Gretel/Princess/Daughter/Rapunzel/Little Red
Female Identifying/Presenting, Trans or Non-Binary, Any Race, early 20s to early 40s
Should be comfortable with physical movement, dance or fight choreography, strong vocal characterization work.
In this reimagined world, the Princess is not in need of saving. She is powerful, independent, and active, choosing her own path. Whether it's Rapunzel escaping the tower on her own terms or Little Red Riding Hood confronting the wolf head-on, these characters don't wait for rescue—they take control. The Princess, traditionally passive, is now a force of action. She might be portrayed as a warrior, rebel, or even a mysterious heroine who makes bold decisions. Gender expectations are upended by having the Princess lead, fight, and make decisions for herself.
Track 5: The Fool: Father/Dumb King/Miller/Guard 1/Grandma
Male identifying/Presenting, Trans or Non-Binary, Any Race, 21-40s
Should be comfortable with physical movement, dance or fight choreography, strong vocal characterization work. Strong Character actor. Strong Physical Comedic Actor.
The archetypal fool—whether a bumbling king, naive father, or feeble grandma. This character brings comedic relief, often offering the audience a chance to laugh at their mistakes and misunderstandings.
Track 6: The Villain: Stepmom/Animals/Detective/Sorceress/Mom
Any Gender, Any Race, 21-50s
Should be comfortable with physical movement, dance or fight choreography, strong vocal characterization work. Strong Character Actor, will be embodying animals in human form.
The Villain is the driving antagonist, and gets the job done. She’s cunning, manipulative, charming and tragic, but overall efficient in getting what she wants. She flirts with the audience to pull them to her side and keep her sympathetic while getting what she wants.
Track 7: The Enchanted Creatures: Witch/Animals/Rumpelstiltskin/Guard 2/Wolf
Any Gender, Any Race, 21-50s
Should be comfortable with physical movement, dance or fight choreography, strong vocal characterization work. Strong Character Actor, will be embodying animals in human form.
These are the magical, mystical, or mischievous beings that push the action forward. They could be either allies or antagonists, and their role can be anything from helping the protagonist to creating chaos.
