SYNOPSIS: Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna fights to reclaim a long-forgotten part of herself. Through the support of her fellow waitresses, and an unexpected romance, Jenna begins to find the courage to take a long-abandoned dream off the shelf. Waitress celebrates the power of friendship, dreams, the family we choose and the beauty of a well baked pie.
The pronouns and ages listed are descriptions of the characters, not the actors. Actors are welcome to express interest in being seen for any role, regardless of gender or age.
Jenna – This role has already been cast. We are looking for a Jenna Understudy. Female identifying, 20s - 30s. Jenna is a woman stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. She finds happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day to day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Mezzo-soprano, F#3 - F5.
Dawn/Ensemble – Female identifying. Dawn is the youngest of the waitresses. Thick glasses, hair parted 14 centimeters to the left — eccentric is the nice way to say she’s slightly unusual, and not so slightly OCD. Has great comedic timing and an excellent pop/rock/folk voice. Mezzo-soprano, G3 - Eb5.
Becky/Ensemble – Female identifying. Becky is the oldest of the three waitresses. She is irreverent, irascible, and has been there and made it back and somehow kept her wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Has a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt. Mezzo-soprano, Eb3 - Eb5.
Dr. Pomatter/Ensemble – This role has already been cast.
Earl/Ensemble – Male identifying. Jenna’s husband who peaked in high school. He’s handsome in a gruff way, but has a face clouded with broken dreams. Can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Guitar playing is a plus. Bari-tenor, Eb3 - G4.
Ogie/Ensemble – Male identifying. Strange, yet oddly lovable. Becomes slightly obsessed with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after he goes on a 5-minute date with her. Quirky, incredibly persistent, and kind. Has excellent comedic timing and a pop/rock sound. Tenor, C3 - Bb4.
Joe/Ensemble – Male identifying. The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work. A seemingly old, curmudgeonly man who has a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie). Warm at heart, he’s a sarcastically funny and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Bari-tenor, B2 - G#4.
Cal/Ensemble – Male identifying. A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. Has a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops. Has a strong contemporary singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and have excellent comedic timing. Bari-tenor, B2 - G4.
Norma/Mother/Francine/Ensemble – Female identifying. Doubles as several characters throughout the show including Dr. Pomatter’s nurse, Jenna’s mother, and Dr. Pomatter’s wife. Has excellent comedic timing and is able to navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles with ease.
Lulu – Female identifying, 4 - 6 years old. Daughter of Jenna and Earl. A sweet, carefree child who appears in the last scene of the show. Should be confident and able to engage in a small amount of dialogue and movement onstage.
