Breakdown
A world-premiere from acclaimed playwright, Nicky Silver (THE LYONS, TOO MUCH SUN, PTERODACTYLS, THE FOOD CHAIN, and RAISED IN CAPTIVITY). In this new comedy about love and marriage and everything in-between, Martin thinks he has just married the girl of his dreams, but when Irene makes a surprising confession in their honeymoon suite, all their well-made plans fall apart. Nearly 50 years later, Irene’s children wrestle with their past, and a mother whose secrets are quickly fading along with her memory.
SEEKING:
IRENE
(1958) 27-35 A loopy ingénue, invested in sweetness, which is not to say she’s incapable of a fury that peeks out on very rare occasions. Part Doris Day part Anne Marie (from That Girl), she’s sunny and selfish and lovable. She has just married Martin.
MARTIN
(1958) 25-38 A buttoned down fellow, the man in the gray flannel suit. Willing to fight for what he wants, he still believes in love and has the beating heart of a romantic. ALSO PLAYS: NOAH (2004) A successful theater director. Complicated, neurotic, smart and somewhat self-sabotaging.
MELKA
(1958) 60s A bitter chambermaid with a thick polish accent, a big chip on her shoulder, and painfully small shoes. ALSO PLAYS: IRENE (2004) A confused woman, with an excess of rage. She’s both sad and bitter over the wrong choices she’s made.
DONALD
(1958) 24-30 Whatever his actual age, Donald is mostly a boy. A room service waiter with a childlike quality and a bright demeanor. ALSO PLAYS: LEO (2004) A young actor. Earnest, witty with a streak of petulance. Lovable despite himself. (Noah’s lover)
EMIL
(1958) 30-40 A brawny gas station attendant. Sexy and slightly thuggish in a Stanley Kowalski mold. (Irene’s lover.)
SHELIA
(2004): 30-45 A pushy, blousy New York real estate broker. Twice married and about to break for good under the pressure of caring for her aging mother.
