BREAKDOWN

WILLIAMSTOWN FESTIVAL THEATRE 2025-26 SEASON

CAMINO REAL

Written by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Dustin Wills
Venue: MainStage, ‘62 Center for Theatre & Dance
First Rehearsal in NYC: Monday, June 9th 2025
First Rehearsal in Williamstown: Tuesday, June 24th 2025
First Performance in Williamstown: Thursday, July 10th 2025
Final Performance: Friday, August 8th 2025

SEEKING:

GUTMAN: Masculine, any ethnicity, 40+ An authoritarian. Based on characters from Citizen Kane and Maltese Falcon. He is the number two to the Generalissimo, an unseen force that keeps order in the Camino. He follows the money, and where there is none, he resorts to emotional and physical torture. He's Matron Mama Morton. But he has problems in the bedroom since his wife keeps trying to sneak out of the house. So he is also probably impotent and has little man syndrome. He makes up for it in wielding power.

GYPSY: Feminine, any ethnicity, 40+ A capitalist. A wanderer. Will sell anything, including her children. Sleeps with one eye open. Has a vivid imagination when called to create distraction. Though she is called the Gypsy, she is not Romani; it is an act.

DON QUIXOTE, LORD BYRON: Cis-male, European, 30s/40s Don Quixote, as made famous from Cervantes. A dreamer. A madman. With a huge heart and vast imagination. Weary from traveling. Lord Byron is that same Romantic era British poet. He may or may not know he is going to die in this moment, at the age of 36.

A RATT, AS CAST: Masculine, any ethnicity, 30s/40s. This man is a seedy, back alley capitalist doing anything he can to keep his business afloat. He leers into the plaza of the Camino Real like a mafioso neighborhood watch and is probably never not smoking.

LA MADRECITA, AS CAST: Cis-female, Latina/Spanish, 40+ Motherly. Eternal. She feels, in many ways, as much a piece of the architecture of the Camino Real as a caryatid might. Her pathos is undeniable.

ROSITA, AS CAST: Cis-female, Latina/Spanish, 20s/30s A prostitute, selling love. She believes she is a fantasy maker. But the well has run dry, and it's getting harder to make a buck every day.

BARON DU CARLUS, NURSIE: Cis-male, European, 40s/50s. The Baron, as made famous by Proust. A licentious gay man. And then also Nursie, a brash caretaker who hardly takes care. A terrible sot.

LADY MULLIGAN, AS CAST: Cis-female, any ethnicity, 30s A playgirl, waiting for her husband to die. Caught up with appearances. A gossip. She doesn't trust a soul.

LORD MULLIGAN, AS CAST: Cis-male, any ethnicity, 60+ A man on death's doorstep, but for some reason just refuses to die. Resilient despite physically falling apart. He has all the money he could ever need.

PRUDENCE, AS CAST: Cis-female, European, 55+ A friend of Marguerite. She's batty. She's been in the Camino Real too long and may be going stir crazy. She'd do anything to get out of here.

DREAMER, AS CAST: Cis-male, Latino/Spanish, any age. A soothsayer. A flamenco singer/musician.

UNAVAILABLE ROLES:

MARGUERITE GAULTIER: CAST Cis female, European, 55+ An eccentric. From the Dumas fils novel. Her light is fading. Was once paid for sex, now pays for companionship. Money seems to be of no consequence to her. Has an opium addiction and has recently escaped from an asylum.

JACQUES CASANOVA: CAST Cis male, European, 45+ A romantic. Empty pockets, lacking his once luxurious lifestyle, and losing hope (but still hanging on to every ounce he has left). Desperate to survive. A child trapped in the body of a man past his prime. Once upon a time he could charm his way out of any predicament. Those days are gone. He is a picture of what Kilroy will become if he stays in the Camino Real.

KILROY: CAST Cis male, any ethnicity, late 20s. A fighter. American traveler and former boxer with a bad ticker. He is the picture of American optimism (and stupidity). Very earnest. Faithful, willful, propulsive, wide-eyed. Discovers there is no hope for escape from the Camino, yet still does everything he can to combat his fate, even after his own death. He will never give up. And like Don Quixote, to whom he becomes a Sancho at the end of the play, will continue on his Romantic adventure despite the world. Probably smiles too much, even when talking about sad things.

ESMERALDA: CAST Cis-female, any ethnicity, Teens/20s. A caged bird. From the hunchback of Notre Dame. Kidnapped at birth by a Gypsy and raised in the survivor's world. She is constantly drugged throughout the play by her Nurse and mother. In all of her lucid moments she attempts jailbreaks.

NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES includes explicit content, nudity, intimacy, and violence. There will be appropriate supervision and choreography processes for this content. A note from the director: There will be nudity, there will be intimacy, there will be violence. This adventure will not be for everyone. An explicit erotic interrogation of caged men in the summer heat of 1938 held up to the light of our 2025 Queerness, which will no longer be hid in the shadows and corners of the love that dare not speak its name but tells the Truth of the culture of homoeroticism intrinsic to prison life.
