Breakdown

Special Entry Instructions:
Please enter at the Q St. door.

Be prepared to show photo ID at the desk. The personnel there will then direct you to the audition location within the building.

Please be prepared that parking is very limited and can be difficult. Please allow additional time or take public transportation. Theater J is located 4 blocks (10 minute walk) from the Dupont Circle Metro (Red Line) and is convenient to both U Street (Yellow and Green) and McPherson Square Metros (Blue & Orange) and is accessible by many bus lines.

The Last Schwartz by Deborah Zoe Laufer
Rehearsals begin August 8, 2016;
performances September 7 – October 2, 2016

Setting: Upstate New York, mid-2000s.

Roles:
NORMA -- 45. The eldest Schwartz. The keeper of the flame. Fervently self-righteous and religious, but hungry for family.

HERB -- 40. The oldest Schwartz brother. Financial wizard.

BONNIE -- 30’s. Herb’s wife. Generally on the verge of hysteria. Weeps easily. Desperately wants a baby. Has converted to Judaism.

SIMON -- 35. The middle brother. An astronomer. Going blind. He wears coke-bottle thick glasses, a very loose-fitting cotton outfit, and white gloves.

GENE -- 30. The youngest brother. Directs TV commercials. The family’s golden boy and a bit of a kiss-up.

KIA -- 20. A starlet from L.A. She lives to have fun. Can turn any interaction into a party.


The Christians by Lucas Hnath
Rehearsals begin October 17, 2016;
performances November 16 – December 11, 2016

Setting: America, the 21st Century.

Actors of color are particularly encouraged to audition for this play, as we are actively seeking a diverse cast

Copenhagen by Michael Frayn
Rehearsals begin December 5, 2016;

Setting: Various, mostly 1941.

Roles:

WERNER HEISENBERG - 40s-50s, the German physicist

NIELS BOHR - 40s-50s, Heisenberg's Danish counterpart

MARGRETHE NORLUND BOHR - 40s, Niels's wife, an integral part of his life and work


The How and the Why by Sarah Treem
Rehearsals begin January 16, 2017;
performances February 15 – March 12, 2017

Setting: Cambridge, Mass and Boston, present day.

Roles:

Rachel Hardeman -- 28, evolutionary biologist. Graduate student at NYU. Emotional. Excitable. Brilliant.

Zelda Kahn -- 56, evolutionary biologist. Senior professor at Harvard. Reserved. Cynical. Brilliant.


Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon
Rehearsals begin March 6, 2017;
performances April 5 – May 7, 2017

Setting: Brooklyn, 1937.

Roles:

EUGENE MORRIS JEROME -- almost 15

BLANCHE MORTON – 38, Eugene’s widowed Aunt

KATE JEROME – About 40, Blanche's sister, Eugene's mother

LAURIE MORTON – 13, Eugene’s younger cousin, Blanche’s daughter

NORA MORTON - her sister, lovely at 16

STANLEY JEROME – 18, Eugene’s older brother

JACOB ''JACK'' JEROME -- about 40, Eugene's father


Broken Glass by Arthur Miller
Rehearsals begin May 15, 2017;
performances June 14 – July 9, 2017

Setting: Brooklyn, November 1938.

Roles:

Sylvia Gellburg -- mid 40s

Phillip Gellburg -- late 40s, Sylvia's Husband

Dr. Harry Hyman -- early 50s, Doctor of Sylvia Gellburg

Margaret Hyman -- late 40s-early 50s, Wife of Dr. Hyman

Harriet -- early 40s, Sylvia's sister

Stanton Case -- 60s, Phillip Gellburg's employer
