Seeking
East West Players, the longest running theater of color in the US is seeking performers to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, Asian American, African American, Latino and Middle Eastern for the Who’s TOMMY, by PETE TOWNSEND & DES MCANUFF.
Preparation
Please prepare 16 bars from a song in the style of Tommy, (up tempo, rock) or from a contemporary show that demonstrates range and acting ability. Feel free to sing from the show or from “the Who’s” Song Catalogue.
Other Dates
The role of Tommy is being auditioned at a separate EPA on 1/25.
Rehearsals begin April 6, 2015. Tech Rehearsals begin April 30, Previews begin May 7, OpeningWednesday May 13

Breakdown
After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother's lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia, and as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he’s discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball, and when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he becomes an international pinball superstar.
CAPTAIN WALKER/ENSEMBLE: Male, Tommy’s military father, 35 – 50 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, or Asian American
A former soldier with linger guilt. He murders his wife’s lover after coming back from a POW camp, resulting in Tommy’s trauma-induced blindness, deafness, and dumbness. Eill Play additional Ensemble Roles

MRS. WALKER: Female, 25 – 40 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, or Asian American.
A weary middle-class woman. Mrs. Walker is tired and frustrated from trying to care for and cure Tommy.
Range: F3 – D5 (pop mezzo soprano)
UNCLE ERNIE: Male, Mrs. Walker’s brother and Tommy’s uncle, 30 – 45 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, Asian American, African American, Latino or Middle Eastern
A lecherous, drunken bachelor. Ernie molests a young Tommy and later seeks to profit from Tommy’s popularity. Will play additional ensemble roles.

COUSIN KEVIN: Male, Tommy’s cousin, 18 – 25 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, Asian American, African American, Latino or Middle Eastern
A bully with sadistic tendencies. Tortures his cousin, Tommy, when they’re young and later seizes the opportunity to profit from Tommy’s success. Will play additional ensemble roles.

ACID QUEEN/ENSEMBLE: Male OR Female (to play female impersonators), 25 – 35 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, Asian American, African American, Latino or Middle Eastern
A brazen drug dealer and prostitute. Tommy’s parents bring him to the Gypsy to experiment with unusual cures. Will play additional ensemble roles.

SALLY SIMPSON/ENSEMBLE: Female, 18 – 25 to play Pacific Islander, South Asian, Asian American, African American, Latino or Middle Eastern
A bold, sensitive, and excitable teenybopper. Sally Develops a fan crush on Tommy and rushes the stage to be close to him. Will play additional ensemble roles.
