BREAKDOWN

FALSETTOS

SYNOPSIS: This is the story of a confused, bisexual man, Marvin, amidst a Jewish family in New York. Initially, Marvin seems blessed with the perfect family. He has a caring wife, Trina, and a young son, Jason. Nevertheless, the family is soon broken apart when Marvin leaves Trina for another man, Whizzer. Trina, meanwhile, ends up with the family psychiatrist, Mendel. All the while, Jason is stuck in the middle.

NOTE: There is virtually no spoken dialogue in Falsettos, and therefore, it requires strong, trained singers who are first-rate actors and can move well.

CHARACTERS

MENDEL: 30s-40s - Jewish. The smart, quirky, and kind family psychiatrist who has a crush on Trina. Eventually, he marries Trina and enters the tumultuous world of her life with her son, Jason, her ex, Marvin, and her ex’s lover, Whizzer, while struggling with his own feelings. Marvin uses humor in situations but is not a clown. His humor comes from truth. (Baritone, Bb to high C#, light dancing)

JASON: 11-13 – Jewish. Marvin’s and Trina’s son – bookish and awkward – Jason’s impending Bar Mitzvah, his parents’ divorce and the entrance of Whizzer (his dad’s male lover) into his life leave him confused, sometimes angry and trying to sort it all out. Jason’s voice has not yet changed. (Tenor, low G to E, light dancing)

MARVIN (CAST): 30s, Jewish. A devoted husband and father, smart, funny, and charming. Struggles to reconcile his desire for a happy traditional family with his love for his male lover, Whizzer. Marvin is trying to find himself while being married to a woman, Trina, and yet, bisexual. He can be selfish and jealous; confused and needy. (High Baritone, low A to E, light dancing.)

WHIZZER (CAST): 20s-30s. Marvin’s young, sexually active lover who is not used to being in a committed relationship. Extremely handsome, athletic, and confident. Has a tempestuous, often volatile relationship with Marvin. He eventually contracts AIDS. (Tenor, low Bb to G, light dancing.)

TRINA (CAST): 30s, Jewish. Wife to Marvin, Mother to Jason. Charmingly neurotic in her effort to understand the conflicting feelings she has in the aftermath of her divorce. She consults Mendel, her husband’s psychiatrist and eventually marries him. (Mezzo, low A to E, light dance)

DR. CHARLOTTE (CAST): 30s. One of the ‘lesbians from next door’ – Charlotte is a dedicated doctor alarmed by the mysterious illness that is killing her gay male patients. Tough, but extremely nurturing and very much in love with her partner, Cordelia. (Mezzo, low B to Eb, light dance)

CORDELIA (CAST): 30s. The other ‘lesbian from next door’ – Cordelia is Dr. Charlotte’s partner – she runs her own kosher catering business, is very keen on making a nice home – but also wants to be useful and valued for her contribution to the world. High belt voice. (Soprano, low A to Eb, Light Dance)
