Equity actors for understudy roles in Idaho Shakespeare Festival's 2025 Season (See breakdown). We encourage performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, abilities and ages to audition. Shows are shared between Great Lakes Theater, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.

PREPARATION

Please prepare either one brief Shakespeare and one brief contemporary monologue, OR two brief Shakespeare monologues. Please bring a stapled headshot and resume.

IDAHO SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL 2025 SEASON

TWELFTH NIGHT

SEEKING:

(Considering Understudies Only)

VIOLA / CESARIO: Viola, shipwrecked and disguised as Cesario, is clever, resourceful, and conflicted as she navigates love for Orsino while falling for Olivia. She balances strength, vulnerability, and wit.

OLIVIA: A noblewoman in mourning, Olivia is strong-willed, passionate, and impulsive, quickly falling for Cesario. She is witty, stubborn, and temperamental in her pursuit of love.

ORSINO: The Duke of Illyria, Orsino is noble and charismatic but overly idealistic in his love for Olivia. He is emotionally driven and can be self-indulgent, often caught up in romantic fantasies.

SEBASTIAN: Viola’s twin brother, Sebastian is bold, confident, and adventurous. He is straightforward and falls quickly in love with Olivia, adding to the play’s mix of mistaken identities.

MALVOLIO: A pompous, self-righteous steward, Malvolio is disdainful of the revelry around him and becomes the target of a cruel prank. He’s arrogant, gullible, and unaware of his own absurdity.

FESTE: The wise fool of the play, Feste is witty, insightful, and able to reveal truths through humor and song. He is clever, perceptive, and often serves as the voice of reason in the chaos.

SIR TOBY BELCH: A drunken, mischievous knight, Sir Toby is fun-loving and loves chaos. He’s loud, boisterous, and enjoys playing tricks, particularly on Malvolio, but is loyal to his friends.

MARIA: Olivia’s clever maid, Maria is practical and quick-witted. She masterminds the prank on Malvolio and is loyal, resourceful, and sharp-tongued.

SIR ANDREW AGUECHEEK: A foolish, vain knight, Sir Andrew is easily manipulated by Sir Toby. He’s pompous but completely incompetent, always trying to impress Olivia despite his ineptitude.

ANTONIO: A loyal sea captain who saves Sebastian, Antonio’s deep love for him leads to confusion when he’s mistaken for Cesario. He is noble, self-sacrificial, and devoted.

CURIO: A servant in Orsino’s court, Curio is loyal and sharp-witted, offering comic moments and insight while supporting Orsino’s pursuit of Olivia.

CAPTAIN / PRIEST: The Captain rescues Viola and guides her through the chaos of Illyria. The Priest marries the couples at the play’s conclusion. Both roles require authority and earnestness.

VALENTINE: A loyal attendant to Orsino, Valentine is courteous and supportive, playing a small but important role in Orsino’s court.

Belinda Blair – Optimistic and friendly actress, tries to keep the cast together despite the chaos.

Dotty Otley – Forgetful, seasoned actress who struggles with her lines and blocking, adding to the confusion.

Selsdon Mowbray – Elderly, alcoholic actor who often disappears, neglecting his role in the play.

Tim Allgood – Overworked stage manager, scrambling to keep things running amidst the chaos.

Frederick Fellows – Young, eager but inexperienced actor, often flustered by the mayhem.

Poppy Norton-Taylor – Assistant stage manager, overwhelmed and distracted by her crush on Tim.

Brooke Ashton – Beautiful but dim actress, more focused on her appearance than the performance.

Gary Lejeune – Passionate but melodramatic actor, entangled in romantic drama with Brooke.

Lloyd Dallas – Frustrated, exasperated director, trying to salvage a production full of incompetence.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

SEEKING:

George – The central character, a 19th-century French painter (based on Georges Seurat), whose intense focus on his pointillist technique drives him to emotional distance. He's absorbed in creating his masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, often neglecting his relationships.

Dot – George’s model and lover. She is vibrant, passionate, and longing for more emotional connection with George. Frustrated by his obsession with his art, she ultimately becomes weary of his neglect.

Old Lady – A somewhat mysterious figure who is often seen in the background of the scenes and has a few key interactions with George, offering some reflection on the passage of time and George’s legacy.

Nurse – A practical and no-nonsense character who serves as a foil to George and Dot’s more emotional and artistic turmoil. She represents the more grounded, ordinary world compared to George’s obsessive art world.

Jules – A fellow artist and friend of George’s. He often serves as a voice of reason, questioning George’s methods and encouraging him to consider life beyond art. He represents the more social, less obsessive side of the artist's life.

Yvonne – Dot’s practical friend, who is concerned about Dot’s relationship with George. She often points out George’s emotional neglect of Dot and suggests she move on.

Boatman – A character who appears in George’s painting as part of the scene. He’s a quiet, stoic figure who represents the background elements of life in the artwork, contrasting with George's obsession with the finer details of his masterpiece.

Celeste #1 – One of the models for George's painting. She has a sense of independence, contributing to the life and movement in George’s art.

Celeste #2 – Another model for the painting, Celeste #2 adds to the variety of personalities and poses that populate George's work.

Louis – A fellow artist and a friend of George’s. He contrasts with George’s single-minded obsession with his painting, offering a more relaxed and playful approach to life and art.

Louise – A model who is part of George’s painting. She adds to the atmosphere of the painting scene and to the tapestry of personalities in the world of the work.

Franz – A worker or part of the social scene at the park where George paints. He helps populate the world of the painting and illustrates the variety of figures George observes.

Frieda – Another model for George's painting, contributing to the character and energy of the artwork. She helps flesh out the vibrant world that George is capturing.

Soldier – A character in George's painting, representing the broader world outside of George’s immediate circle. His presence in the artwork helps to make the scene more complete, adding a layer of historical context.

Margot Wendice – A wealthy, intelligent woman having an affair with Maxine Hadley. She’s strong-willed and resourceful, unaware of her husband Tony's plan to murder her.

Maxine Hadley – Margot’s lover in this adaptation. Maxine is deeply involved in the complications of Margot’s life and the unfolding plot.

Tony Wendice – A cold, calculating former tennis player who plots to kill his wife, Margot, for her money after discovering her affair.

Lesgate – A petty criminal blackmailed by Tony to murder Margot. Nervous and reluctant, he becomes an unwilling pawn in Tony’s scheme.

Inspector Hubbard – A sharp, experienced detective investigating the crime. He quickly grows suspicious and starts to unravel Tony’s plot.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER

First Rehearsal: 8/26/25 (possibility of starting a week later: 9/2/24)
First Public Performance: 9/5/25

SEEKING:

PETER (Boy)/ENSEMBLE: A brave, adventurous orphan who doesn’t remember his past but is destined for greatness. Fearless and resourceful.

MOLLY/ENSEMBLE: A smart, independent Starcatcher-in-training who helps guide Peter on his journey. Clever, resourceful, and able to balance strength with vulnerability.

BLACK STACHE/ENSEMBLE: An over-the-top pirate captain with a flair for the dramatic. Charismatic and comedic yet menacing. Requires strong physicality and excellent comic timing.

SMEE/GREGGORS/ENSEMBLE: The good-natured, bumbling bosun of Black Stache’s crew. Loyal but naive, Smee provides comic relief and moments of warmth. Has a great sense of humor and physical comedy.

PRENTISS/ENSEMBLE: A self-appointed leader among the orphans, brash and eager for power. He’s a bit selfish but shows growth as the play progresses.

TED/ENSEMBLE: A fun-loving, optimistic orphan who is a bit naive but fiercely loyal.

LORD ASTER/ENSEMBLE: A composed and principled nobleman who secretly protects the magical starstuff. Possesses wisdom, authority, and a deep affection for his daughter.

HAWKING CLAM/SLANK/ENSEMBLE: Slank, a pragmatic villain with strong physicality and menace. As Hawking Clam, comedic timing and physical humor.

MRS. BUMBRAKE/TEACHER/ENSEMBLE: Mrs. Bumbrake is a warm, somewhat scatterbrained caretaker with a lot of heart. Overly protective and occasionally dramatic, she provides comic relief through her exaggerated affection for Molly. Teacher is strict, proper, and authoritative, commanding respect in a no-nonsense way.

CAPTAIN SCOTT/ENSEMBLE: A stern, dignified British naval officer, calm and authoritative but occasionally out of his element. He maintains composure amid chaos and serves as a foil to the more eccentric characters.

ALF/ENSEMBLE: A loyal, good-natured sailor with a simple, earnest demeanor. Kind and slightly naïve, Alf brings warmth and sincerity to both serious and comedic moments.

GREMPKIN / MACK / SANCHEZ / FIGHTING PRAWN/ENSEMBLE: Multiple roles: Grempkin: A grumpy, strict schoolmaster with little patience for the orphans. Mack: A mysterious, gruff character who adds intrigue. Sanchez: A pirate with a tough exterior and a few surprising quirks. Fighting Prawn: The wise, dignified leader of the Mollusk tribe, protective and honorable.
